Nice recipe damsfly.
Peanut butter and PB sauce is distinctive in it's flavor. I'm not sure there is any substitute you could use instead OF it. Yet I did find, through googling:

These are also delicious dipped in honey mustard sauce that you can make or buy in the produce section at the store. I've also mixed together ketchup and mustard and it's very tasty.

sKally, is there another way to prepare the sauce without peanut butter? My daughter is allergic to peanuts.
Can she handle other nut butters? Cashew might be really nice.
Or you could apply the same flavorings to hummus. Don't need to add garlic to that. Wouldn't be quite as Chinese, but oh well. The other suggestions are excellent, of course, but you might be jonesing for a smooth, savory sauce.
Well, tonight we're dining on spaghetti and a very pretty salad: spinach, butter lettuce, green onion and red bell pepper (the last two very savory together) and bean sprouts. With ranch dressing.
I don't follow the Food Network very closely; but I do love epicurious.com.
