On May 8, 1955, I was baptized. I was 9 years old and it was a special baptism on a Sunday. For some reason, we didn't have a Circuit Assembly in the Spring that year, so they just held a baptism.
What were my parents thinking?

Well, that was in 1923, and everyone knew that the ancient worthies were going to be resurrected soon.
Your parents did it to purchase your salvation from our Heavenly Merchant of Life.
...just teasing you about the dates! I'm so evil.
They were probably wondering what the nebulous "age of accountability" was when a child is no longer protected by "family merit" at Armageddon that had been discussed in 1952. Of course, the WTS doesn't say what that age is. Your parents probably heaved a sigh of relief that now you would be one of the "millions now living who would never die."
*** w52 1/15 p. 43 Training Children for Life in the New World ***
Paul writes: "For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in relation to his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in relation to the brother; otherwise, your children would really be unclean, but now they are holy." (1 Cor. 7:14, NW) Therefore this proves that minor children of Christian parents are indirectly sanctified or counted worthy of protection in God’s sight until they reach the age of individual responsibility. Hence in this day of final judgment since 1918 parents are responsible for the final destiny of their minor children. When Armageddon strikes all minor children who are not under such "family merit" arrangement will meet annihilation with no hope of a resurrection. This is strongly indicated at Ezekiel 9:6 (AS), where it is written: "Slay utterly the old man, the young man and the virgin, and little children and women; but come not near any man upon whom is the mark."
*** w52 6/1 p. 344 Fixing Destinies in This Judgment Period ***
There comes a time when the maturing children shoulder the responsibility for themselves, having reached an age of accountability and responsibly choosing the course they will follow. They then come out from under family responsibility or merit and under the principle of personal responsibility
I wonder what they would have done had you started smoking at the age of 9 and didn't stop?
Can you imagine a 9 year old being shunned for at least a year? I wonder if there have been any?
Also....just wanted to say hi to Marilyn....and a happy baptism day to you. You guys shoulda celebrated cuz it woulda been a good excuse to drink lots of wine or other spirited beverages

Hi Gumby!!
Hey, I was around then, kinda. I was a 3 month old fetus in my momma's tummy. She had married my dad that very week in 1955. You were getting dunked in water, I was floatin' in it yet.
Hey, Mulan, just read your story on DIsfellowshipped.org
Sorry I had not done so before - I can relate on so many levels.

good grief, Mulan. I thought it was bad I was 12. It seemed the thing to do back then...I know my mom was only eight. She didn't even know what 'fornication' meant, didn't find out till way afterward. How can a child with such limited knowledge of everything including life itself ever be held to the rules of the cult who baptized them? and the WTS has the unmitigated gaul to point at the Catholic church and damn them for baptizing babies. We were babies!!!
I have to send you an email soon...lots to catch up with you on!
xoxo

I thought you were going to say something else.
I guess I'll start my own thread.
Mulan , you even beat me by a few years..
.Really, what could we know about life, in order to hand it all over "to Jehovah" and vow to do "His will henceforth". Too young to vote, too young to drive, too young to drink alcohol, still a child at school - Yet we made a vow that is said to be binding for the rest of eternity and the simple changing of our minds in adulthood is worthy of the "second death" and total shunning by everybody.
The funny thing is that is supposed to modelled on the baptism of Jesus who was reckoned to be a man of 30 when he was baptized!
