I remember it well. We lived in a 2 bedroom house with one bathroom. We once had 15 people in that house -- I think I slept in the hallway at one point. Have to say those were good times. I have fond memories of people staying, although I cannot remember any names or faces, I just recall enjoying having people stay with us.

From reading your posts - I find that all of us had either good or bad experiences. Fortunately we had this same couple from Austin,MN w/us for each of those assemblies.
But I did hear horror stories. Like one poster said, that she emptied 3 bedrooms (bless you) and the people decided not to stay, but go on to Disneyworld. There are a lot of very rude JWs out there.
Never heard of anyone stealing or going through personal stuff. Not that it didn't happen though. Yeah. That was risky business. But don't you know - THE ANGELS ARE WATCHING OVER YOU.

We opened up our home to a nice family and we became friends.
When I was still very young I remember doing the same thing however the family that stayed with us spoke Spanish. The dinner table was interesting to say the least. Lots of sign language and laughing.
I remember when they did that. I was just a little tyke, but I remember my parents helping canvassing the area asking people to take in "delegates" for the convention. Different times for sure.
Wouldn't be great if they still did that?
For those of us who live in convention cities, we could open our homes up to the JW delegates and watch em freak out when they see our collection of Harry Potter movies, Smurfs TV shows, Black Sabbath CDs. And on the coffee table a copy of Crisis of Conscience.
undercover, times are different now than 30 years ago. I thought it was dangerous back then to have complete strangers stay in your home, JWs or not. Notice that when JWs are considered for special needs (free rooms with JWs), they have to be highly recommended by the BOE.

Needs Room Request forms are available only for publishers whose accommodation needs cannot be cared for by family members or by their congregation. The Congregation Service Committee should consider the publisher’s qualifications, using the guidelines on the form as well as the letter dated December 14, 2004, addressed to all bodies of elders. This provision is only for publishers in good standing, along with their well-behaved children.Few years ago a sister from Japan stayed at my home and all the gaterings were done in my home.
My kids were about 10 and 11 and my husband was not attending meetings.
2 or three years ago they were in need of homes for the Italian delegation to stay and I offer my house again but this time they asked me to come and inspect the house to see if it would be in good condition for them.
They knew how my house looked like!
When they asked me that I told them that I was no longer able to offer my house.
I figured that since my kids were older I was no longer qualifying for that "privilege" (even thought my kids were better behaved than most in the cong)
Figure that Hypocrasy out?
(sorry about my spelling)
A few months before I was df'd I was among the French delegates to one of the first free international conventions held in Poland in 1985. We (four French bethelites) were accommodated by a family in Poznan and later by a young couple in Warsaw. Those were really nice, warm, hospitable people and I keep very fond memories of them. Lots of fun trying to communicate with a mix of Polish, French, English and German. The bright side of the JW-world.
Remember it??? I'm trying to forget!!!
The first DC I went to was New York City. We stayed at an apartment in the Bronkx. As were looking for the place we passed men literally lying in the gutter to sleep. Another one or two were sleeping on the sidewalk curled up to the buildings.
To make matters worse there was a garbage strike because there were piles of garbage everywhere. In the morning we watched as the garbage men came by and picked up a can and just dumped it on the ground and drove off to the next pile.
2 or 3 times a night there were sirens, firetrucks and whatever else going past - blaring lights and noise. A restful sleep was out of the question
We found the building, went in and started up the stairs where we watched a rat as big as a cat run into a hole in the wall large enough for a person to get through.
When we got to the door we knocked and the woman on the other side wanted to know who was there so we announced oursleves and then listened as she unlocked 7 locks. click click click click click click click and then scrape. Once we were all inside she replaced the bar that set into a hole in the floor and braced the door closed. and then the click click click click click click click as she locked every one of those locks.
She showed us to our rooms and to the kitchen and showed us where the bathroom was. OMG
We went to the kitchen where the lady was sitting at the table eating. In shock we all watched as a huge cockroach walked into her plate. We thought maybe she had poor eyesight and couldn't see it so my mother told her and she just shrugged and said they were like flies and just shoved it aside.
Over the toilet there was an upside down umbrella and a lot of plastic hung over the seat, filled with water. The sink looked like the only thing holding it up was the dirt on it. My mother asked for a bucket so we could wash in that. The seat had roaches walking all over it. The roll of toilet paper was filled with them. They were all over the tub. We were stuck with this for 8 days. 8 very long days.
It was so disgusting. My mother bought bug spray to sray all around the room so we could try to keep them off the beds
I remember the last day we were packing everything to go home and making very sure we didn't bring any home with us when one of my brothers spotted a huge (at least 3 inch long roach) hanging on the end of the cord that was right over the suitcase. One of my brothers offered to smack it off and my mother screamed NO!!!! the last thing we wanted was for it to fall into the suitcase.
When we got home we unpacked our suitcases in the bathtub. If we had any hitchhikers we wanted to be sure to catch them before they went out and multiplied
Now..... if only I could forget it
Oh my god Lady Lee.
This was a householder that was someone's study or a good return visit? We were encouraged to get a feel for the facilities to make sure it was appropriate for our brothers.
