Total Recall.
I felt the same way last week at the dentist when he wouldn't stop laughing and giggling with his assistant while working on my teeth. Remember that horror flick "Dr. Giggles"?
Hope all turns out well for you. Think possitive!

Aw my little muffin! that's awful news :( I hope all goes well. Dams
Hell, maybe you can give me a "ride" home from the hospital! Hold on a minute! There's nothing "little" about me!
Good luck! I'm had sinus problems for years as well. The doc only ever prescribes me steroidals and cough syrup. I think I need a new doctor.
During the surgery the Dr has to pack the sinuses with gauze and then pull them out a few days later... the removal of the packing is what my mom was talking about......................yep.........what Rabbit said is true.........I had a bad abcess in my jaw after they removed my wisdom teeth.........that Dr. crammed about 10' of gauze in that tiny hole........I thought I was going to make a new skylight for his office.......it was excruciatingly painful.........even grosser when he drained it before that.........it was like a big gush of warm junk down my throat........thought I was gonna baptize him with it!!! gross!!!!
Hate to hear about the problem you're having. I hope all goes well with the surgery.
I wish you the best. I just had sinus surgery last November. I've had chronic sinusitis for years and when I had an MRI (for something unrelated) they noted that I had a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates, which essentially had closed off my nasal passages....thus the continual infections, pain, snoring, poor sleep, headaches, etc. So, I decided to have the surgery.
They didn't pack my nose so much with the gauze, but used a nasal splint to keep the septum straight and the nose 'open'. I won't lie....when they removed the splints, I felt pain like I'd never felt before.....I cried in the office as they removed them. Thank God for pain pills. Afterwards, I developed another infection because he couldn't clear everything out when he removed the splints because of my pain. So, I have to say that it was one of the worst experiences of my life.
BUT........I'd do it all over again, because the results have been great! I can breath through my nose, no longer snore, sleep better, have next to no sinus headaches, etc. I didn't want to scare you, but since your mom told you your dad's story, it's not like you don't know that it can hurt. I just wanted to let you know that even if it is painful, that you will most likely be glad you had it once you heal. My surgery was definitely worth it.
I hope all goes well with you and will keep you in my thoughts for sure!

After the Doc pulled my brains out, er, the gauze thru my nostril -- and when I could speak -- I said "Has anyone ever kicked the crap out of you for doing that ???
He said, "Nope, did you see where I was standing ? Besides, I'll just kick 'em back !"
There...you are properly prepared for surgery.
Awww...think of good outcome you'll have.
Your friendly Rabbit

Shnoz Update!
I went to the ENT Specialist yesterday and here is what he said:
It turns out my other Dr. did not convert Centimeters to Inches properly, so instead of being 1.5 Inches in diameter the polyp is 2 cm or just under 1 inch in diameter. It's still there, but not as big as I thought.
The ENT said that the polyp is not the cause of my breathing problems and added that he will likely leave it alone and do nothing to it.
He did notice that I have a bone structure that is in the wrong place and far too large along with several other problems. He suspects these are the cause of my breathing difficulty.
After looking at the CT Scan he had the nurse spray a numbing substance up my nose, and when I say spray, I mean SPRAY! Have you ever had a two or three year old cup their mouth over your nose and then BLOW? (Please don't tell me I'm the only person in the world who has had that happen! ) I was gasping and squirming the whole time, which took about five seconds for each nostril... then she did it again with a decongestant spray.
Once I was nice and numb the ENT Doctor came back and inserted a long flexible scope device up my nose and looked around. He also had me make a "snoring" sound and a few other things while he watched what happened in the back of my nose and in my throat. He said that he noticed some soft tissue that was not quite right.
I asked him about surgery and he said that he was not quite ready for that yet. One thing at a time, he said. So surgery is not in my future... yet.
What he did do is schedule me for a Sleep Study because my breathing problems are worst at night and he suspects I have sleep apnea. I'll go to the lab tomorrow night at 9:30 where they will hook me up to all sorts of instruments and monitor me as I sleep overnight.
This should be very interesting. I have seen them do this on the Discovery Channel, so I'm very curious what they will discover.
Cool! You're into your very own science experiment! Good luck actually sleeping . . .
