A few weeks ago, I told you guys that my dad was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. Well, he went to the hospital Monday for an operation. Prior to the operation, with scans and x rays of all types, they saw that he had a tumor on his liver as well as on his lungs. When they operated him on Monday, they saw that he also has stomach cancer....

He's 76 and his parents and brothers and sisters all died of cancer in their early to mid 80's.

Probably he will come home in a few days after he gets over his intestine operation. I don't thik that they will give him chemo or radiation therapy since he is too far advanced in his sickness. They weren't even able to remove the tumor on his intestine. They had to make some kind of bypass taking intestine parts from elsewhere to connect him properly...

I hope he won't suffer too long...

    Dear JH,

I'm sorry to read about your Dad. My father died from multiple myeloma (bone cancer) when he was just 66. He had just retired and that next year he got sick and found out he had this cancer. It was a very sad time. He died within a year. So I can feel your pain. I'm thinking of you and wish you peace.

    Love,

    Juni

JH, I am so sorry. You said

    diagnosed with intestinal cancer

Did they say the original cancer had metastasized? Or are the new findings just that new?

Please keep us posted. Good luck to your dad - L_G

Yes, most probably it started in his intestine and spread throughout his body. My dad only found out that he had cancer a month or so ago. Probably he had this cancer since a while, but they found out about it too late.

Sad to hear that, the cancer seems to have spread more than originally thought, and unfortunately all we can do is hope that he will experience the mimimum discomfort.

I'm sorry about your dad, JH. I just found out last week that my Dad also has Lung cancer(he's 70). He is scheduled for radiation this week. I won't know anything more until my mother calls back though.

So sorry, JH. That's difficult news to hear. Hope they can at least make him comfortable.

Cancer in certain areas of the body are the worst because they spread quickly. There is something out there called palliative care centers for later stages of illness. They work with the patient and their families. In particular they will work closely with the patient to help them with the pain aspect of the cancer. You may want to contact one in your area and see what options your father has and what options your family has as well. I believe they will also put you in touch with therapists and counselors to help the family thru the process of the cancer.

Again, peace to your and your family. L_G

Make sure you stay on top of the Doctors regarding pain management for your Dad. Doctors tend to be shy about prescribing large amounts of narcotics because of the way the FDA watches them so closely. Doctors are afraid of being fined or loosing their license for promoting the misuse of narcotics so they just let their patients suffer in pain.

If your father is hurting, make sure you bring him to see a Pain Management Specialist... and stay on top of them to ensure your father's pain is properly controlled.
