Are PETA more active in the US than over here?

In the UK they are probably the tamest group and do tend to lobby where it's needed.

Well, at least they don't go around kidnapping dead people...

The point with rearing animals as a commercial enterprise means that they will be raised at minimal cost and many corners will be cut. Animals will not be given enough space to move in, will be fed with unnatural foodstuffs and probably given hormones to produce more meat or milk.

On the other hand organic meat is too expensive for most people.

I agree, sometimes the PETA folks can be absolute twits. However, if you've ever been inside one of those enormous facilities where animals are raised, slaughtered, and processed for sale, you'd most likely be horrified, and you'd understand why these folks are so committed to their cause. The conditions, in even the best of these facilities, are deplorable and cruel. I would never allow my cat to be treated like that; therefore I can't justify allowing a chicken or a cow to receive such treatment, not when viable alternatives exist. I just feel that would be hypocritical. I've been a vegetarian for about 24 years, and I don't find it to be a hardship, there's always plenty for me to eat, without killing another creature.

First of all I would like to say that I once was a vegetarian for about 2 years and generally agreed with what PETA represented. As a year or so past I fell in love with the pit bull breed and found a few things out about PETA that they did not advertise openly on their site.

So here are a few facts that that you might want to know before supporting this organization:

    - PETA supports breed specific legislation as well as the wholesale killing of all bull breeds.

    - PETA wants to stop the ownership of all pet animals.

    - They believe ALL forms of human/animal coexistence should be banned.

    - PETA has killed over 10,000 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters.

    - PETA killed over 85% of the animals it took in during 2003, in which they said they would be adopting out.

    - PETA has spent tens of thousands of dollars defending arsonists and other violent extremists.

    - 2 PETA employees were arrested in Virginia, July 05 on animal cruelty charges b/c they were caught dumping dead animals in a grocery store garbage container. They found 18 dead dogs in the container and 13 animals’ carcasses in a van that was registered to PETA. There was also a “death kit” found in the van, which was filled with syringes and two drugs that only licensed vets can have. Here is the article

    truth about PETA

PETA seems to be not too concerned about animal welfare, either.

The PETA animal shelter story broke last year, after which many vets would no longer send strays to a PETA facility.

KFC should be admired for making people think it's sexy to feed your family out of a bucket.

    ig.

Guess they are more active elsewhere then.

I checked out the UK PETA site and they do publicise their disagreement with 'companion animals' here.

Didn't seem to have any particular reason for singling out KFC for their boycott though. Just 'the chickens are treated really bad' - which happens wherever they end up.

Oh, well. No good deed goes unpunished.

They really should have picked a better target area; Grand Junction is a pretty damned conservative town in an already conservative state.

I rang my brother to tell him about this story; he's no righty, by any means, but I thought he'd get the "ultimate right-winger fantasy" bit. He saw the joke, but he was much more fascinated by the "injured chicken costume". He wanted to know how high you had to be in PETA's heirarchy to be authorised to wear the wounded chicken suit.

Hey Stephanus! I hope all is well "down under". Give your good wife a kiss for me and say hi to the kids.

Hi Robyn! I've been thinking of calling you lately Everyone's fine.

    How're all your moggies?

Aw, thanks for asking. The moogies are great! They send their love.

Yah, it would be fun to catch up. My number will probably be changing soon as I am considering moving to the east coast in August. I'll pm you the new one when I get it. Take care!

I do not support PETA in any way, but I do believe that some of the claims made against them are false.

You would think that in a civilized society we would find better ways to eat than to mass slaughter millions of animals a year that have lived deplorable lives suffering in FACTORY farms.

Pigs live in pipe enclosures in dark cement buildings where they can not barely move for their entire life until it is time to be moved to slaughter. There they are tortured with prods, beaten and kicked. They are not seen as living beings that FEEL pain, fear or agony.

Cattle have it no better on FACTORY farms. Feed lots reek with the stench of their own crap that they are standing in. Often they are not knocked out like they are supposed to be before the cutting begins, piece by piece they die. Witnesses have testified to this fact.

Chickens are CRAMMED in FACTORY farmed cages. Their beaks are cut with a hot knife, their legs become deformed and God help them if they get out of a cage in hopes of freedom. They die slowly in the excrement of a thousand suffering hens.

We make fun of them, and eat them. Well power to ya. You'll see just how tasty they are when you are in the hospital trying to survive a massive coronary. This all comes at a cost. Love~Kate

Most of the stuff you point out is either hyperbole, untrue, or outdated. Debeaking is not practiced by any of KFC's suppliers:

PETA Attempts to Mislead Public With Outdated Video on Chicken Production

(Washington, D.C., January 7, 2003) - PETA is attempting to mislead the public with an outdated and questionable video on chicken production, the National Chicken Council said today. "The beak-trimming machine shown in the PETA video is a 'Lyons' model used about 30 years ago. The system shown is no longer in common use in our industry," said Richard Lobb, a spokesperson for the National Chicken Council. "PETA's attempt to portray this outdated method as today's standard practice is false and misleading."

PETA spokesperson Bruce Friedrich insisted that all the video was shot within "the last year and a half." In fact, other portions of the video were taken directly from another video that bears a copyright date of 1997, and the actual date when the video footage was shot was not disclosed even then.

"PETA's false statements about the age of the video obviously beg the question of whether there are other elements in the PETA campaign that are false or out of date," Lobb added.

A proper concern for animal welfare is already well established in the broiler chicken industry. High-quality food can be made only from high-quality animals that have been properly cared for, Lobb said.

Beak trimming is never performed on broilers -- animals sold for their meat. When done, it is conducted on day-old male birds in the breeder flock in order to prevent injury to other birds as roosters become aggressive with maturity. Only the sharp tip of the beak is removed, not a large portion as shown in the outdated PETA video. Precision laser technology is rapidly replacing blade systems.

Perhaps in this attitude of yours we see a glimpse of the true motivation of animal activists; not so much a love of animals, as a dislike of people.
