The Bribe of Heaven and The Threat of Hell.

Which is it that cause you to believe that either teaching from the Bible is truly the Truth. Is the desire to want to go to heaven the reason you believe what you believe, or is it the fear and threat of hell that makes you walk the line so to speak.

I don't believe that God needs to or has ever bribed or threathened anyone with 'do this or else.' I believe what is written about God in the Bible are the words of men.

Until I get a personal experience from God in my own life I will forever remain " Doubting Thomas".

I do not fear that I will go to hell because of this, nor do I think that I will go to heaven if I change my mind. Whatever awaits me after death will come no matter what I believe.

Feel free to correct my thinking, I accept all constructive criticism. Also feel free to support my thinking if that is how you feel. A quote That I like very much,"Do good, for good is good to do". I think that says it all.

Agreed. What we are is more important than what we believe or don't believe. That is the point of reincarnation... oops.

    I don't fear hell, I fear God

    Job 28:28

And to man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom! And to depart from evil is understanding!

    Psa 111:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

    Pro 1:7

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

    Pro 9:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

    Pro 15:33

The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.

If you don't believe the bible, there isn't much to discuss.

DD....now that's about as narrow minded as you can get.....isn't it? That's how people become dubs and that's how people end up in cults.......not thinking outside the box they are in. I'm thinkin you need a good old fashioned nutbag spankin for thinkin that-a-way.

If not for the bible, why would you believe in heaven or hell?

Are you saying that believing the bible will have you ending up in cults, how so?

Speaking form the POV of my Roman Catholic upbringing I think it's hard to decide which because the choice was hellfire or heaven via purgatory - which is nearasdammit hell!! I guess my motivation was to hopefully make it to purgatory and spend as little time there as possible

I don't believe that God needs to or has ever bribed or threathened anyone with 'do this or else.' I believe what is written about God in the Bible are the words of men.

Hmmm. I agree in a way. I believe the Bible is the words of men but I also believe that those men were Spirit inspired and possibly the written word has been interpreted without the spirit so it just became a list of do and don't. The spirit is what Jesus put back into interpretation - for example his expounding of the commandment 'Do not commit adultery'. The Jews read and applied it literally - they kept the letter of the Law but Jesus taught that it was about more than that, it was inner attitudes which had to change too.

As regards God making covenant with the Israelites, it was written in the style of a vassal treaty - "This is what I've done for you, this is what you do for me in return, if you break your side of the bargain I'll withdraw my favour" it might not do the same for you but for me, it sometimes makes those 'threats' of punishment seem more reasonable.

Until I get a personal experience from God in my own life I will forever remain " Doubting Thomas".

That's fair enough, it is where you are in your walk. Jesus was kind to Thomas. Whether you know it or not, God still loves you regardless!

DD...I never said that. I said not considering anything "outside of your box" CAN leave many suceptable to cults....and a host of other misguided thinking. Have you ever done a critical examination of the bible? My guess is.....you have not. Now then, come here and let me give you that nutbag woopin
