I have seen elders demonstrate time and again that they don't have faith in God; if they did, they would let go, and let God (as AA says). They are just like the Pharisees and the scribes in Jesus' day. They had tons unwritten rules that invalidated God's.

But JWs have to listen or they get marked or booted.

We generally have about 3 or 4 congregation gatherings a year. We had one a few months ago as a surprise party for our CO as it was his last visit, and it was organised by some of the elders and their wives.

It never even occured to me that the Society might not like this, it's probably only a matter of time before these get stopped then...

We used to arrange our own big deals until too many people were being told not to attend for whatever reason. But only a couple of years ago we'd arrange soccer games in a schoolyard and were never told to stop.

If you really need to socialise with these people, you're going to have to organise it yourself.

An elder I was talking to in the KH after the meeting says that "he and the other elders would like to have a congregation picnic but can't because Bethel disapproves of large social gatherings."

Is that for real? I mean seriously it is not a joke?
What are they expecting to happen? a large orgy of geriatrics?

...I mean if that is true, that's not even funny any more, that's just sick...

Funnily enough that scripture from Hebrew 10:24,25 that they so often associate with meeting attendance I alwasy understood as social gatherings and now have just read in Ray's CoC book he writes the same.

One of the very few enjoyable JW experiences I had as a child was attending the large picnics and softball games held once or twice every summer. Now JW kids don't even get that. Just gets worse and worse.

Have you ever known a witness sue the soicety because of an accident at a social gathering?

I attended a congregation baseball game where one sister got hit in the face with a ball, and landed on the ground head first on a rock. She was rushed to the hospital for stitches. She didn't sue.

I wonder why an elder would even ask Brooklyn for permission to begin with?
We had all sorts of congregation picnics and parties. I was actually in charge of arranging one a couple of months before I started fading. It was a potluck dinner, dancing and karaoke party with a summer theme. Everyone dressed up in their summer wear.
There were games, face painting, skits and gifts for the kids. It was held in the party room of the PO's condominium. There was no alcohol and as I recall, there was no one breathing down my neck about keeping things under control. It was actually a really fun evening, almost "normal".

It seems that the Spanish congregations are having a good time with gatherings and picnics and parties, and such. Maybe other cultures are also having gatherings and more, but not the ________. I'm not sure if it is an ethnic thing or a cultural one, but when we were not attending our hall, we would be gathering with the spanish cong.'s and having a good time. It was nice to see people laughing, smiling and having a good time. People dancing and eating, just like other normal people, :)
