This thread brings back some memories - made me laugh!
Regarding the song selection & absence of pianist. For many years I was the pianist in the hall. it was kind of a position of honour, I guess, what little we "sisters" could have. over time, though, it got so that only those who were pioneers or ministerial servants were allowed to do it. Soon they phased it out entirely. The line I heard was that they wanted to curb any special feelings that might have developed among the musicians. Strange, since the bible is full of accounts of the power of music - King David was a singer and musician, for example. But they really didn't like us musicians individually.
It also might have to do with something that happened in our circuit. A high profile elder who played in the band for conventions ran off with the flute player. They disbanded the orchestra the following year.
it used to be that the visiting speaker on Sundays was allowed to choose a song. I remember one elder, a former opera singer, turned the congo on its ear by having everyone get up and sing a song every 10 minutes during his talk - to illustrate a point. It was wonderful! So innovative. Heh. yeah, I don't think he's giving talks anymore.

Nosferatu, your post cracked me up! Back in the day, my mom and another elderette took turns playing the piano. They got this deer in the headlights look when playing some of these clumsy ditties, and being rivals, they would snicker at each other's rendition. My mom would elbow me or dad and giggle, "She sure missed a lot of notes!" Some of the songs were so bad, the congregation would just stop singing on the rough patches and take it up later on the chorus.

Welcome J28, great to see a first post start with the word Arseholes. Hope to hear more from you.
In our cong we always cracked up over the r-souls too.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating. It shows the subliminal brain washing dubs are unaware of.
In the song #160 Walking In Integrity
"I hate the company of those who truth despise"......
Great way to start a "Christian" meeting.

Song 91
Being Taught by Jehovah
(Isaiah 54:13)
1. Jehovah sends out light and truth;
He is our Grand Instructor.
He leads his sheep so patiently
As their Divine Conductor.
His time has come for all to learn
That he is the Supreme One,
Who lovingly provides instruction
That the meek ones does bestir.
His Master Worker, Jesus Christ,
Was greatest of earth’s teachers.
He spoke the things his Father taught,
Explaining Kingdom features.
As chicks are gathered by a hen,
He seeks in love to help all men.
Today he teaches, just as then,
The sheeplike ones within his pen.2. Jehovah gives us shepherds too,
Who strive to teach with insight.
Their educated tongue reflects
That in their heart they’re upright.
The weary ones they seek to help.
Unruly ones they counsel
By teaching what is true and right;
In this Jehovah takes delight.
Taught by Jehovah now we are;
His Son directs the teaching.
A priv’lege we indeed do have
As truth our hearts is reaching.
If fondness in our hearts will burn
For those who for the truth do yearn,
It’s by proclaiming all we learn,
They may to God in worship turn.3. “Come, learn about Jehovah God,”
That is our invitation.
A teaching work is under way
That promises salvation.
By printed page and word of mouth,
The good news of God’s Kingdom
Is being preached throughout the earth
To ev’ry tribe and nation.
As fellow workers, we have need
In faith to be progressing
And keep in step with present truth,
His Kingdom to be stressing.
And soon through Christ’s Millennial Reign,
The resurrected ones will gain
Instruction so they may attain
To perfect life in earth’s domain.Even during my most fanatical dub daze the above song filled me with almost uncontrollable rage. Especially the second verse, where it talks about "shepherds" and their "educated tongues"! It made me want to run around the kingdom hall, swinging a hatchet at fleeing elders.
