I am patriotic. I am lucky and happy to have found myself by accident of birth living in a beautiful and wealthy country.

I stand for the national anthem, but more importantly, I endeavour to always follow the laws of the country. I get a little frisson when I hear patriotic music, but not when they are used as sport themes.

I don't think that my country's history is spotless, and I don't think that it's current actions are worthy or good for long term conditions at home or abroad. I always vote, so whatever happens, I know that I didn't do nothing to change things.

I believe that I have more to give my country alive than dead, particularly at times like this when the threat to our cherished freedom comes from the heart of government.

Everyone in the UK has some Irish blood, mine is well diluted, but this sums it up:

"Irish blood, English heart, This I'm made of
There is no one on earth I'm afraid of
And no regime can buy or sell me

I've been dreaming of a time when
To be English is not to be baneful
To be standing by the flag not feeling shameful, Racist or partial

Irish blood, English heart, This I'm made of
There is no one on earth I'm afraid of
And I will die with both of my hands untied

I've been dreaming of a time when
The English are sick to death of Labour, And Tories
And spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell
And denounce this royal line that still salute him,
    And will salute him forever."

Not really. I don't know the words to the National Anthem, and certainly wouldn't fight for the UK on a war. The nearest I get to patriotism is hoping England do well in the World Cup. I am not all that interested in football, but my bf is, so I am supporting England for the next few weeks.

I grew up in an intensly patriotic home. Fourth of July was a very big deal...speakers stationed outside with John Phillip Sousa marches playing, strings of plastic flags draped around the roofline of our wrap-around porch, a giant "Whitehouse" flag on the flagpole in the front yard, marching in the local parade (which was huge, we lived in a large suburb of Chicago), big BBQ for all the neighbors and relatives who wanted to stop by, legal firework-viewing at the public park and then back home for some illegal fireworks in the back yard. My country right or wrong-type mentality.

Its hard to erradicate that completely from your psyche. Even as a very devout JW, I had to struggle with it.

Even knowing that there is so much wrong with our government and our military (some of which I saw firsthand as a military wife), the embers of patriotism still smolder in my heart.

I'm a patriot. Chuck Berry could'nt have said it better.

Oh well oh well I feel so good today
We just touched ground on an international runway
Jet-propelled back home from overseas to the USA

    New York, Los Angeles
Oh how I yearn for you
    Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge
God I long to be at my home back in old St Lou

    Did I miss the skyscrapers
Did I miss the long freeway
    From the coast of California
To the shores of the Delaware Bay
You can bet your life I did
Till I got back to the USA

    Looking hard for a drive-in
    Searching for a corner cafe
Where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day
Yeah, and the jukebox jumping with records back in the USA

I'm so glad I'm living in the USA
Yes I'm so glad I'm living in the USA
Anything you want we got it right here in the USA

Ah we're so glad we're living in the USA
Yes we're so glad we're living in the USA
Anything you want we got it right here in the USA

    Ah we're so glad
    We're so glad
    Ah we're so glad
    We're so glad

I'd like to see the National Athem changed to "Ths Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land" by Woody Guthrie.

    Welcome Catbert!

How many of you ex-JW's... salute the flag? Yes, but I'm atheist, so I say the classic flag salute. (I pause when it comes to the part that includes "under God") sing the National Anthem? Yes, but not very well (it's a really hard one to sing --- there is this one set of really high notes!) are ready to kill in a war for the USA? (depends on whether it is a necessary war or not. If we were attacked and are defending ourselves, yes (think Pearl Harbor). If we start the war, then every sort of diplomacy should have been used to reach a resolution first, and we shouldn't rush into it based on lies, and if it is a war that I feel is morally wrong, I speak out against that war, not my country, to hopefully make my country better) Tammy

NOT ME !!! BUT, I will defend my family from intruders if need be. Don't trust the government enough to believe what they say. OFG said:

I' don't salute anything... If my Anthem is "With A Little Help From My Friends", Then Yeah... The only thing I'm killing is this Spliff that I'm holding/smoking

    I'm with you OFG. Acadian
