Anna had her ideas, alright, mainly in response to Ron and Joyce. It was myth.

She returned to Latvia, and ironically Ron and Joyce returned here!

Are ya coming to the BBQ in a fortnight? It'd be good to see ya, after all these years!

I am back and had a fantastic time at Stonehenge, the place is amazing and yes full of energy which seemed to amplify with the ever increasing crowd of travellers, pagans and party/festival goers. Our journey down there started at about 5pm on Tuesday and we couldnt ask for a better drive down.

At one point we thought we were lost, however we got better directions from a local who confirmed that we were on the right track; he did give us a short cut which meant we dodged most of the silly traffic going to the venue. Nevertheless we got to the car park at about 10.00pm and pitched our tent in the carpark and then made the 1.5mile trek to the stone circle.

We got close to the circle and as it came into view I remember the hairs on the back of my neck being stood on end; hearing the incessant drumming and the sporadic roar of cheering from the centre of the stone circle was just amazing. I remember a poster on here telling me about this some months ago and she was right, it was eerie but great at the same time.

The weather took a turn for the worst at about 2am and lots got soaked but as it began to rain heavily the crowd went mad and all of what must have been 15,000 people roared and shouted at the rain constantly for about 2 minutes; as a matter of coincidence the rain ceased at that point! The mood was definately jovial.

The night went on and we went walkabout to see one of the pagan rites which involved fire, music and dance...and involved a bloke dancing round with a huge extended phallus which without being disrespectful to any pagans on this site was hillarious and he found it mighty funny too. (Then again with one that size, any man would be happy!!) The drums and percussion instrument pounded to perfect timing and perfect synchronicity. Needless to say the music was fantastic and certainly for me was one of the highlights of the evening. I will post some of those pics when I get them on email from the friend I was with (she got a better photo view than I did).

By the time the dancing had finished the sun was beginning to rise and the wait for a perfect sun to bounce through the stones at sunrise began. The sun wasnt having any of it and didnt really appear other than for a few seconds but I got some of the better pics.

When sunrise came and went I came to the conclusion that I was way too old to be staying up all night and all day afterward and needed my sleeping bag badly, the trek back to the tent seemed longer on the way back than it did on the way there but eventually we reached what seemed very much like home (or what would be for the next few hours anyway). I got chatting to some of those that had parked nearby and I stayed up a little being sociable and drinking their wine .

This pic gives you an idea of the kind of atmosphere there was in the morning; I went to sleep with the sound of distant guitar and drumming and somehow remember hearing it in my half sleep too. I woke and checked on Cass (who was still dead to the world in her tent) so I went for a wander into the nearby poppy fields hoping to grab a few pics; the best ones I have included below.

After some time chatting to other people nearby and boiling the kettle I rang a few friends to let them know that the night hadnt killed me off and neither had Jehovah struck me down with lightening for going to such an amazing place at such an important night of the year. Not long after we set off for the long journey home which again seemed longer than that going down.

I plan to go back next year but even if I didnt, I had an absolute memorable night which will stay with me forever.

Hope you liked the pics, if some are a bit blurred particularly the sunrise ones, sorry but I was quite cold and shivering.

Nice bit of reporting. No mention of a police presence though. In the past the police have been criticised for being heavy handed at such occasions. I was surprised the crowds were allowed inside the stone circle too. If I'm still in England next year I'm going !
