I forgot about Chet Atkins (as many people do), but he was one of the clearest and cleanest guitar players ever...being a country guy, he has been missed by many other genre lovers.

Best solo live: Clapton, for Crossroads; that is a very complicated and soulful lead, just blisters.
My favorite guitarist right now, one that would play ALL the others right off the stage, and he is in his 60's:
Richard Thompson.
He is unbelievable live. Other guitarists might miss a note live, or play simpler versions (eric clapton for one) but Richard's live shows are MORE complex than the studio versions, stronger.
Try to seem him live, he is well worth it.
