One of the town officials had a good point: They can't tell the owner who he can sell to. I wonder why the owner wasn't present to help the dubs with their application? If this is such a prime piece of real estate, maybe he can get a better offer?

I am presuming sale of the land was contingent on getting the re-zoning. The owner can sell to whoever he likes but the Dubs can't build n it without re-zoning.

I suppose they could imitate their masters and buy prime real estate, squat on it, and then sell it. But of course Brooklyn would never do that would they ...

    ahem

The charitable work is the key. If an opponent to a KH can make the case that the KH is not used for charitable events, in the same way that a church rec hall is used for community events, then perhaps planning & land use commissions can be swayed from granting variances to zoning. In this case, it seemed that the land in question was "prime" land, with main road frontage. I think that the tack taken to not grant the variance based on tax revenue generation was good.

I remember when living in PA there was a big flood along the Susquahanna River. A sister gave an experience of how she went along the flood area giving away free literature to the victims as though that was assisting anyone.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

It shouldn't be too hard to make such a case. The bulk of JW activities are recruitment (field service & bible study) and retention (meetings). In my 20 years as a JW I never saw them engage in any true charitible work.

Mr. Corbett: Thank you Dale, Kevin and members of Council. As a long time resident of Stratford, since

1975, I have seen many changes in the past 31 years in Stratford and it is a pleasure to make

this presentation. It has been explained that we are here to make a request of a rezoning change

so that we can build a Kingdom Hall. For your observations we have some floor plans, which

will closely approximate what we do plan to build. What you will see is that there is a

Kingdom Hall which seats about 150 people. There are two different floor plans. One is

slightly larger than the other. We also have some exterior pictures of what the Kingdom Hall

    would look like.

(Displayed on a picture board) The Kingdom Halls are meant to be

functional, attractive and we are very aware of making them fit the area in which they will be

    built.

The meetings that we have are a little different than from other places of worship. At the

beginning of the week, Tuesday evening, we have a small gathering for bible study. On

Thursday evening, these are our meetings as they are currently held - at 7:30 there is a meeting

in which the whole congregation meets for two hours, as well as on Sunday morning we meet

at 10:00 a.m. for two hours. As you know, places of worship are also used for weddings and

memorial services, as well as other purposes.

That is what we would like to do on this piece of land. In talking to our engineers who looked

at this piece of land, they did remark that it the best piece of land that they have probably seen

in the last year. We have a building committee and we also have those who are involved in

various areas of construction. One real estate expert that we consult with on a regular basis

noted that he has never seen such a nice piece of land for our purpose. We are very anxious

to see that this is rezoned for our purposes and we feel that it will be a real credit to the Town

    of Stratford.

LOL you are right, this was priceless! Nice attempt at emotional appeal "I have been here 31 years" --he should have continued that thought with "I haven't done a damn thing except annoy my neighbors."

How exactly, are the JW meetings different from CHURCH meetings?

The cherry--how the hell would it be a credit to Stratford to re-zone PRIME COMMERCIAL real estate that would generate tax revenues into land that the KH would be built on?!?!?

Oh I know, at Armagedon Jehhober might 'look favorably' on those who helped his organization. He might not kill those council members.

Yeah! Go Canadians! I just loved the whole exchange...
    "So, will it generate taxes?"
    "Nope."
"So, have you excercised your rights as citizens?"
    "Well, no...."
"Ok, can we use the hall for charitable purposes?"
    "Not a chance."
    "Wow...do you even live here?"
"Sort of. But don't worry, our members pay taxes!"
    "Yeah, ok...whatever. Request denied."

I just threw up in my mouth a little

LDH - I'm sorry. Maybe it'll help to know my pio partner and I worked for at least two weeks helping people dig out from under the gunk. Um, I think I counted the time, too...

Melanie sounded knowledgeable about the jw lack of charity work.
