I think it was a combination of Bowen, Barbara Anderson, Silent Lambs activities, Dateline and other exposes and lawsuits that forced changes in policy.
Silent Lambs is doing good work.

Thank goodness the family when over the head of the Elders and got some real results. I imagine the Elders are taking a lashing for trying to brush that under the rug. The kid who did the molesting is a messed up youngster too, with an insane mother and a whimpy Dad. He needs help which all the kids in that family would have been denied. I hope the family with the molested child will get him help too.

Wow, I would not expect a CO to proceed in that way. I hope more will follow, even more I hope the WTS will change its policies. Was the CO supported by the service department? What happened is very bad. The molester was only 16 and might be a victim himself. I wonder if the CO would have handled it the same way if the molester was an elder. My experience is that youngsters get hammered down harder in the cong. Are they looking for examples to prove they don’t cover up? There is no big loss in kicking out a disturbed 16 year old. I think the Jesus Cano case will be used to counteract the accusations made by silentlambs and others. If the WTS ever changes its policies it will not admit to the horrendous cover-ups of the past.
This CO action gives me new hope. Thank you, fts

That experience related at the opening by unique1 sounds very, very similar to what happened to my son. When we found out about it (the abuse was by an older cousin, and started when my son was 5 or so), my son was 15 and the cousin was in Bethel. I drove to Bethel the next morning and brought the cousin home to deal with the issue. Two days later he was back at Bethel and nothing was ever really done about it.
My son just turned 30 and I'm not sure if he'll ever get over what his cousin did to him.
If Silentlambs had been around then, maybe the whole thing would have been handled differently.Bill may have stepped on some toes, but he's also stomped on some insteps that needed stomping.
When my son's abuse was eventually revealed to the authorities by his mother and I, the abuser's elder father called us and essentially told us that we'd be judged by Jehovah for doing that. We never did get a call from the brothers at Bethel inquiring about how our son was doing, though they did assign some Bethel elders to help the abuser Bethelite.
I, for one, wouldn't be too quick to badmouth Bill Bowen. He's done a lot of things that needed doing.

I have a feeling if it hadn't gotten out to more than just immediate family it would have been covered over ...

I apologize if I left anyone out. I thought all of those were affiliated in some way to the work of silent lambs. My bad. So here is a shout out to all of you who have rallied against the JW child abuse policy and have sued and worked proactively with others to ensure changes are made. Seeker4 I am so sorry to hear that. I wish the best for your son in his recovery.
