I must have been about 7 years old at the time, but I remember I was at someones house for bookstudy, and I was playing around and put my hand between the cushions in the sofa and pulled out a pair of panties, I held them up in the air and said "whos are these" I got my ass whooped that night, probably the only reason why I still remember it, but everyone in the house was laughing at me.

    Well...our congergation rarely laughed.

However, one time on a Tuesday night book study...the reader read the word organisim but instead of saying that he said orgasm. (ya he wasn't the greatest at reading) I didn't wanna laugh but it was to hard to keep it in.

There's counsel in the school guidebook that says there should not be joking and laughing during the meeting.

our last CO was constantly joking, even during DC parts he'd joke around alot and they loved him. The one we have right now is extremely dry and most of the jokes go over the congregation's head's.

There were a couple younger elders in my congregation who I really looked up to as a child. They would always bring pop-culture references and humor into their talks and I would always try to immitate that when I got to give talks an the ministry school. The only specific humorous moment I remember was a talk one brother gave that featured a few original short plays--one of which involved me pretending to be a mainline protestant. It really wasn't all that funny. It was just a clever presentation of a strawman argument, but it got a good laugh out of everyone.

I had a couple of CO's that had a good sense of humor. Vernon Wheeler, who was bald, mad a reference to Elisha when he called out she-bears on the young men that were mocking him with the line, "Go up you bald head! Go up!" The congo broke out in riotous laughter.

Raymond Harriman, was extremely funny. During one Field Service meeting he asked, "What makes you nervous in the Service?" His answers were hillarious.

I wonder if they are still CO's?

    *** be study 31 p. 193 Respect Shown to Others ***

Resist the temptation to make witty remarks just for the sake of making the audience laugh. This detracts from the dignity of the Bible’s message. True, we should take delight in our service to God. There may even be facets of our assigned material that are somewhat humorous. Yet, to reduce serious matters to laughing matters betrays a lack of respect for the audience and for God.

Thanks for the recent quote Blondie. In my young day I was at a congo that was blessed with a lively body of elders and the meetings frequently caused mirth, for all the right reasons.

I now only attend to assist my wife. Her congo, and the one before that, I don't think I have ever heard raise a chuckle. Either they are just poor speakers?[yes] or perhaps the point has been made through C/O channels.

Perhaps 15 years ago in the South UK. I recall a D/O "David Carter" who was a great comedian and had audiences rolling - at least in informal type items. I bet they stopped him doing it .

When I gave talks and items I never planned anything to be funny, I don't think that I could do it , and anyway it was supposed to be a serious assignment, but sometimes things just happened in the course of 45 mins. If you are not note-bound and have a measure of confidence and rapport with the audience, I used to find that some things just happened to come over amusing - No body complained ..They would probably censure it nowadays

In the last hall that I attended, there was an elder that caused some of us to laugh outloud from time to time. Not that he meant to, he was a dumbass and invariably something stupid was bound to come out of his mouth. Sometimes we rolled our eyes, sometimes we laughed...not at what was said so much, but at him for being an idiot.

To illustrate a point in his talk, an elder pulled a plastic gag chicken from the podium. He had 'em rolling in the aisles. I can't remember the point, but what biblical point would be enhanced by a plastic chicken?
