Yes, exactly what AlanF says. If a piece of software is a real issue, you need a platform that supports that piece of software. Of course, no matter which platform you use, you can use virtualization to get at windows to run a special piece of software.

    VMWare http://www.vmware.com/

    Parallels http://www.parallels.com/

All things considered, Mac OS strikes a good balance of simplicity and dependability.

there is the mini one they do now, you can even dual boot OSX and Linux on them using bootcamp (or windows as well, on a mac!)

there are also illegal ways to get OSX on a PC, running as a fully fledged OS (because of the switch to Intel chips) but its catch 22 if you have all the supported hardware and its not much fun (got it working eventually and removed it about an hour later)

rats Nos My old computer guy lived just a few blocks from you but I heard he up and left town with a new woman.

there's another place I know of and can see it in my head but can't remember the name. Good place for spare parts if you know how to install them. I'll check a map and see if I can find it.

Get a new hard drive and install Linux (my ex tried that and liked it) and keep the present drive for the WIN OS

How would you feel about running Win98? I have an original that I don't need anymore. I was really resistant to XP but now I love it (hence the 98 I no longer need).

Since your obviously one of those who think that bill gates is the devil no matter what he does or doesn't do why don't you just toss the whole thing and get a mac?

Damn.. that's wild that you still run Win95. Any modern OS will be soooo much better than that in regards to stability and what you can do with it. I use Windows XP or Ubuntu. I don't like the Mac OS.

The best processor is definitely an Intel Core 2. Those things beat the snot out of AMD processors. Pick one up!

to be honest, debating over the CPU thingy is pointless, i know folks who like Intel and folks who like AMD. The AMD market is growing, Intel are trying to reclaim lost ground, or you hear that Intel is kicking AMD's ass bla bla bla, end of the day its preference.

I prefer AMD, they are cheaper and so far all my AMD systems have been solid. My Intels are running good too but i've not bought one recently.

Forget Linux and Macs. If your still using Win95, you are not exactly a techno geek, so go with the easy mainstream system.

And I do not mean that in any way insulting. Win XP Home is fine for the general home user, XPpro has a few extraa that most home users would never use and a few which are NOT suitable for the 'average' person.

I've been in the IT trade for more than 20 years, and one thing I've learned is that 'joe average' does not need an all singing, all dancing hyper-speed techno buster machine.

Win XP Home on an entry level Intel based PC is the best bet for average home users. No question !

p.s. Why is it that when someone in america builds the most succesful buisness in the world people bitch at him for doing it ?? Land of free enterprise....I think not!

KW13, actually it's not just preference..it's objective testing. Intel Core 2 processors beat out the AMD processors in every benchmark. Not just a bit, either, but significantly. If you're going to spend $XXX on a new processor, why not get one that is faster?

StormWarrior.. I agree...there's nothing wrong with XP Home. The features it lacks do not interest 99.9% of home users anyway. If you do want those features, check out XP Media Center Edition. It's about the same price as XP Home but contains some XP Pro features (remote desktop, NTFS permissions, etc).
