If you don't want to go with Microsoft and XP (though you shoudl consider it ... most software runs on it!) then have a look at Apple and MacOS.
The benefit (with the new Intel Macs) is that you have the option of running Windows if you need, either with BootCamp (dual booting) or Parallels (Virtual machine) or both!
I would forget Linux, the great white hope / joke. It is crap and always will be.
If you really want to go with Microsoft and XP (though you shouldn't consider it, most viruses run on it) ....
(Couldn't resist)

I suggest looking into Zeta/BeOS. BeOS was a commercial operating system available for purchase until 2000, when they were acquired by Palm, who stopped further development. You can download a customized version of BeOS 5 and install it from bebits.com. Zeta is the finished BeOS 6 which was in development when Palm purchased the company. Zeta can be ordered from Purplus.com, or from Magnussoft. It is quite a bit more capable than BeOS and runs on a wider assortment of hardware. Either one comes with a lot of software, and a lot more is available for download at no cost. I have both on my computer, and use them for internet, email, photos, etc. In terms of ease of use, either one is far superior to any version of Linux (at least the ones I've tried: SuSE, Caldera, Red Hat, Mepis, and Ubuntu). Zeta/BeOS is also stable and there are no known virus which can harm either one at this time. A complete install takes less than 20 minutes.
I was a staunch Microsoft supporter since the eighties.
Now, especially since the new macs are Intel based, I'm a born again Jobsy.
I got myself a new MacBook Pro and have OS X, XP, and Linux at my fingertip with superb hardware.
Mac OS X is very safe and fast.
If I need software that only exists in the XP world, I can boot windows and use it.
Its not the cheapest, but excellent value for money.

Awww Simon... you just can't get used to using forward slashes when using the "cd" command. ;) Linux rocks for certain tasks. Admit it! Don't let your MCSE blind you!
hey stevenyc
Since you have the new macbook, and have loaded xp, what about the drivers for the xp part? Do you have to go to the vendor and load each one separately? Sometimes it is hard to locate the right driver (ex: graphics drivers, dvd burner driver, etc...). Also, have you done any video editing with your new macbook? Right now I'm contemplating upgrading my laptop looking into different options. One more thing, how long does the battery last?
thanx

For certain tasks ... yes, it's "appropriate". However, I don't think it will ever be a serious main-stream desktop OS that everyday people can use. How many years have they been promising this and failing to deliver? The gap between Linux and proper desktop OSs (Windows XP/OSX) is growing and not shrinking IMO.

BootCamp burns a CD which has all the XP drivers to use when in the other partition.
It's quite painless.
I don't know much about all of the different systems out there, but I do know I like Mac OSX. The only thing that bothers me is that on JWD I can't use all of the editing features - I use Safari. Simon, what do you use with your Mac so that you can utilize all of the editing features?
