Ok, so we've talked before about music which was not permitted in our families, leaving us to listen to .... what? Most people in my congregation generally approved of Olivia Newton-John, but became suspicious of her work after Grease, when she bacame a "bad" girl. One song "Landslide" contained the lines "minor desires became major needs, my needs won't be denied", which was taken as proof that she had gone over to the "dark side". I confess that, although I listen to a lot of other artists as well, I still do enjoy ONJ.

Apart from stuff I've got into since moving in with Trev, I listen to pretty much the same music as I did when I was a jw - Carole King, Sheryl Crowe, Carly Simon

Growing up we were pretty much limited to what my Dad subjected us to- The horrifying list includes such names as-
Kenny G
John Denver
The Mamas and the Papas
Gordon Lightfoot
The Beach Boys
Air Supply
Anne Murray
.... I apologize if anyone here is a big fan of any of these... but after listening to the "Edmund Fitzgerald" song about five billion times... it makes me feel like poking my eardrums out with sharp scissors thinking about it.

My parents didn't try to control what we listened to. Mom would make comments about the kind of music we liked (alot of alternative and new wave with some 80's pop thrown in), she called it "white" music.
But then my parents listened to whatever they liked too, mostly 60's and 70's R&B. Groovy stuff, but I didn't think so at the time.

As much as my music was heavily censored I do think my mother was quite liberal in some respects...she didnt mind my Metallica albums and other rock music as long as it wasnt overtly 'demonic'. Of course this didnt stop my collection being hidden but nonetheless I grew up with the likes of Pink Floyd; Led Zeppelin; Dylan etc.
Wasnt too bad in the circumstances and later in life I learned to appreciate all music.

My parents were really strict about musice, but anyone remember that song, "You don't have to take your clothes off, to have good time"?....
I was allowed to listen to this song because my mom said, "they are saying you do not have to take your clothes off, so its a clean song"...Ha!
Looking back, I used love the song "Secret Lovers" but was was not allowed to listen to it. I still hear it on the radio, and blast it!!!!!
Oh, the former JW life as a teenager.

Kingdom Melodies and only Kingdom Melodies... Seriously, I listened to just about anything that didn't have a bunch of swearing in it. I am still very much that way. Not a big fan of country music, which is mostly played around here.
