There was a similar case I recall a few years ago. A man was prosecuted for not having a TV licence but he maintained he only had a TV for watching videos. Apparantly (at the time) a TV had to be disabled from receiving a signal for this to be a valid defence.
Lol - she'd have been better off paying the fine and keeping quiet rather than confessing to having a telly just for her son's Playstation - now she'll have the local Elders round deciding on which games are suitable for the poor lad to keep.

Wow, what a rube! Incabable of lying? Gee, can I get away with that defense too?
Bullocks, I say.

Oh - and when someone hasn't a licence, detector vans are used to see if the unlicenced property IS watching TV, and what channel. I understood this is the ONLY way people were prosecuted.

The judge must be senile, believing that bs.
Perhaps she thought of it as using theocratic warfare strategy.

You mean in UK you have to have a license to watch TV over the airwaves? Tg i live in USA... though analog TV is being phased out over the next couple years :-(

Ok, fill me in... What's this liscence business? You have to pay to own a tv in the UK? Is it all cable reception and you're paying to have the service I assume? Is there no more broadcast service for free? Was there ever? Here in the U.S. we still have free TV over the airwaves, its limited alright, but its there. Whats the deal over there?
The article said that the judge made his decision based on the evidence, not simply the witnoids word.

Yeah you have to pay a tax to have a TV in britain right? I've seen the guys going around with the little antenas looking for people who are 'stealing' signal!
How much does it cost to have a tv?

Wasanelder - In the UK you need to pay for a licence (currently around £135 per year for a 'colour' licence) to receive TV. This fee goes to the BBC (unlike other channels, the BBC doesn't run adverts). One licence covers all TV sets in one household. Over 70 years old and registered blind persons have a discount.
I imagine, in this case, the 'detector van operator' had failed to record the evidence in some way as it's ok to OWN a TV without a licence but to use it would result in prosecution. Detector vans pick up what (unlicenced) households are watching and then prosecute. They are very accurate.
