hi. when i was an elder most of the rest of the body drank like fish, some would regularly get drunk and it was always ignored. then these very same elders would reprove a young lad for excessive drinking! was there similar hypocrisy in your cong????

A couple of the elders were big drinkers, and still are. One used to take the watchtower study, and used to turn up some Sunday mornings looking very much the worse for wear. We had a change around of duties a few years ago, and he was put in charge of the second tms. I often wondered if it was because he was making so many errors on the wt study because of a probable hangover.

Nice to see you chuckyy. You seem a little quieter than usual - is your CAPS LOCK key broken?

I can't remember any elders being particularly boozy. In fact, my family still has a little chuckle over the comment from the then PO (now possibly very puzzled in the afterlife) who said "You can't still be thirsty - you've just had a whole pint!"

    Hi chuckyy.

Yes to both of your questions. Alcohol on their breath and one we saw leaving a bar mid day. It was well known but ignored. So 2 problem drinkers out of 5 elders.

It's surprising that the org is so soft on elders drinking given that biblically elders shouldn't get drunk, perhaps they don't care as long as they don't make themselves public with this issue. But it's hypocritical to criticise the R&F for the same.

There was one elder that hit the sauce hard and often. We went away for a weekend together and notice how 12 beers and a bottle of red wine gets absorbed by him in one sitting. And he seemed coherent after all that. Nothing was ever said to him as far as I know.

I bet he wishes he had sip right now. Especially considering where he may be at this very moment.

All the elders in my old KH were lushes. I confronted one of them in front of another elder about his antics at a get together one day. He went into second stage orbit and never spoke to me again.

Yes with a few of the elders, myself included there for a while until I stopped cold turkey because I realized that becoming a drunk wouldnt get me out of the WT the way I wanted to exit. I have a feeling many elders douse themselves in ethanol to deal with being an elder.

One time on an overnight trip with a boatload of jws, I got drunk in the hotel. I was scolded by the elders who said I would lose my precious rank as a regular pioneer if it happened again...but the tone of the scolding was much milder than usual.....it was said casually in the lobby of the kh....I think it was even said half jokingly....I got called into the back room with 3 elders for wearing black panty hose, to give you an idea of how strict and punishing they usually were. The attitude about alcohol wasn't at all strict.
