I have read to get your exercise quoter in for the day you should be walking at least 10,000 steps per day.................yikes

Ive just taken the dog for his usual 30 minute walk and on average I clocked up about 500 steps per 5 mins...............it wasnt very acurate cos he kept stopping and starting...................but that s only about 3,000 steps per 30 minute walk.

as im not very active ( spend too much time on here) where do I get my other 7,000 steps in ? I would have to be walking round all day

So how active are you and do you think you walk 10,000 steps a day.................test yourself you may be surprised

Oh and those pedometer things are useless, your better of clocking 5 mins and counting yourself.

I clocked up about 500 steps per 5 mins

I walk about 1 hour a day outside, so that makes 6,000 steps

I've bought one the other day. Put it my pocket and walked around the mall, forgot about it then in the moring went to the beach and back, walk down the kiosk to get newspaper and capuccino from Starbacks then remeber I had the thing in my pocket. I thought, great let see how many steps did I do..... 13.

You cannot just put a pedometer in your pocket. They don't work well that way. If instructions came with the device - you should have read them. They would have told you that you need to wear a pedometer on a belt - or around your waist somehow - and orientated so that the little 'clicker' is able to toggle the steps.

Pedometers may not be THAT accurate - but if set up properly, and 'calibrated' - they come close to what you do. There are always variations though, like your stride - which may change depending on if you are walking fast - or slow - or running.

I suppose it might be possible to get a 'laser-pedometer' which might be more accurate - or a GPS-pedometer - which might be accurate to within a few meters.

Personally, I enjoy my pedometer. It keeps track of today's activities, and also up to 7 previous days. I get a general idea of how much that I walk every day.

As far as equating 10,000 steps to mileage - here again - it depends on how wide your stride is. For a midget, 10,000 steps may not be that far. To a 7'0" basketball player, 10,000 steps may cover a lot of ground.

You can get a lot more benefit and save a lot of time by doing some bodyweight squats everyday.

At first, don't do a lot, and keep the speed down to almost tai-chi-like.

Work your way up to a mere 500 each day and you'll be in great shape with time to spare.

You don't have to do them all at once. You can begin with doing just 5 a couple of times a day: the principle is progress, not perfection. Later on as your strength and endurance improve, you'll be knocking out multiple sets of 100.

Just barely touch the chair with your butt when you're going down, then begin coming up.

It's easy for you to say you're only 105

You're right, though I did buy one of those cheep ones without any instructions. If I bought more expensive ones I might have had a better luck

I don't know how many steps I walk a day, but I doubt it's 10000. I definitely don't do that many when I am at work, but may get somewhere near it when on holiday or at weekends, when I take the dog out a couple of times, go shopping etc.
