As I mentioned on another exercise thread by Minimus, moderate exercise is considered an hour a day, everyday. Some people would think that was Olympic training!

Interesting this was posted because I just read something like this in Prevention magazine. I started counting my steps on my walks and if I'm walking a moderate speed it takes 1 1/2 hours to get in 10, 000 steps. I don't have a pedometer but I counted the steps around the track and multiplied it by the times around. But then of course you're supposed to still be getting cardio and strength training in-
All this exercise and eating small potions its not normal. Its so much effort, its ok if you are naturally sporty or energetic but for the majority of peeps its just too much.................if it WAS normal everyone could and would do it............its not so they dont.
And yes, I am about 14 lbs over weight..................
I wore a pedometer every day for two weeks this year. I walk on average between 15,000 and 17,000 steps a day!! I'm wearing my little legs out!
I have to go to school and back three times a day, shopping, and I also cycle for 20 - 30 minutes a day. Tomorrow, I'm putting my feet up!!!
10,000 steps a day .....................are you kidding ???
Oh how I wish for those days again.
I used to easily walk that much in a day when I went to college. The college campus was spread across downtown Montreal and it was a pain waiting for buses or taking the Metro/subway.
I enjoyed walking -- hey I had a lot of practice walking to territories, then doing the territory and then walking home again - what about you?. Hmmmm maybe I wore my feet out lol
After I started cycling I would often do 100 KM/55miles a day 2-3 times a week mostly on city streets not paths.
Now walking to the elevator, going down, then walking back up (maybe 100 steps) is a nightmare the next day.
Now I want to find out how far my chair will go. hmmm will have to find a way to put an odometer on it
If you do a lot of walking and have really sore feet at the end of the day try a pair of orthotics to give your foot a little extra help. They can do wonders once you have the right pair. Start with some of the over the counter ones they sell in pharmacies or at Walmart (either in shoe dept or in the pharmacy - the ones in the pharmacy are better)
Ladies shoes are not meant for walking in especially as we get older because our feet get wider. Women's shoes are too narrow. You need a good "box" (the area where your toes go). I always had a terrible time finding shoes that fit. I finally started wearing men's running shoes. One foot specialist explained a problem with that is that the box might be wider but a man's shoe will also have a wider heel and most women don't get the wider heel. So finding a good fit is really important.
As I started having problems one of the first questions was always "What kind of shoes do you wear?" The next question was "Do you wear heels?" I gave that up 20 years ago due to the amount of pain it caused and I never had anything over a 2 inch heel.
Take care of your feet. They have to last a lifetime
I read somewhere that you need to do 10,000 steps a day to maintain your current weight and if you are trying to lose weight you need to do more!Thats probably why my pedometer is at the back of a cupboard somewhere!
Ive just worked out a little schedule. This is especially if you sit at a computer all day.
I usually walk my dog for 30 mins everyday so now im going to walk him twice that will give me...... 6,000 steps
Then I will walk 400 steps every hour for 8 hours that will give me another ......................................3 ,200 steps
= 9,200 Im sure I will make up the rest as normal.
Ill tell you how I get on
Nathan, I am going to start those body-weight squats ASAP. As it is, I bike 10 miles a week as part of my commute, so I don't have to "find time" to do it. Add another 2 miles most weeks for church :) But it's always good to have ways to crank up the volume without trying to reorient my life around the YMCA.
Now, if I could just find some gentle home exercises that tone my arms and torso without aggravating my tendonitis, I'd be in fantastic shape.
