My Encounter with a Witness

Well, the other night I had invited a young man to my house to share with him, respectfully, the false prophecies of the WT, using older WT books. The conversation started very nicely, with the usual small talk and such. I decided to ask some questions, that I knew the answers to, but just wanted to get the gears in his head turning. I asked him what he thought of religions that didn't allow their members to read other religious literature and he told me that although he would not take something home with him from another religion, he would sit with someone and read it, and discuss it. I asked him if the love that witnesses have for each other is unconditional, and not just based on doctrinal belief's and he said, 'no it's unconditional' (yea right!) .I also asked him how he knew the WT was the truth, if he had studied the Bible prior to studying with the WT (he said no) and a variety of other questions. After each question, he would take about 5-10 minutes explaining things from the Bible and I started to feel bad because he really thought I was interested in the Society when I was about to pounce all over it with their own literature full of false prpophecies (gracefully and respectfully of course). I gave him my testimony about how God had saved me from my sins through Jesus Christ, and that God had put a burden on my heart for people trapped in 'works righteousness' type religions. I went on to explain that the WT has done some things that he probably was not aware of, since he had only been in it a year, and that they had made false prophecies and such. He tried to explain them away and I asked him if we could look at some. I pulled out some books from the WT and he said "I don't want to look at your literature' (keep in mind his earlier comments about how he would sit with someone....). I exlained that these were all published by the WT and I could tell he was getting upset. As I started to read the first few prophecies he was gathering his things! THESE ARE FROM HIS OWN TEACHERS!!! How can you run if you are in the truth!! Long story short, I realized I had about 5 minutes before this guy ran and I tried to fit in as much as I could. I was amazed at how poor his answers were regarding false prophecies. Anyway, it was discouraginig to me becasue I feel that God has called me to expose them, but I really don't enjoy doing it at all. I get extremely irritated when people claim to be in the truth, yet run when it is examined.

That is the thing that get's me. How you have to work to establish that their OWN books say these things. That they distrust everything so much that they WON'T even LOOK at them!!!

How and when do they know that a book no longer is correct? It's 1984's doublethink and complete revising of history. Now that I've read 1984, I always think that "Who controls the past controls the present."

I think that the fact that the CDROM's don't go back farther then 1970 is an indication of the "proper" cutoff date for publications. I think that the WTBTS should print a "born on dating" date or an expiration date on all their literature.

actually they do go past 1970

    Just as a suggestion:

Have you tried asking them to bring a "book you heard about"?
I was at my most shaky when I found stuff that looked blatantly wrong in MY OWN BOOKS!!!

A relative was presented with an original copy of something 1975 -ish, by an "apostate" and wouldn't believe it because "they must have printed it themselves as a forgery!!!".

    Just my 2p,

It makes me think of comparing it to a simple math analogy. 2+2 = 4. We know that is true. Now, if someone were to come to me and say "I have some information that goes against your 2+2 belief's. Would you care to look at them?" I would not run in the other direction because I am so convinced it is the truth, why not look at it? Thus it is with the WT. It shows that they are not clinging to the Solid Rock (Christ) but rather a slippery slope.

Real Truth is consistent with objective reality. Teachings that require you to first discard the evidence of your senses and the evidence of history are bound to be flawed.

Good work, Unclepenn1. You made him think, at least a little, and
    it was obviously very painful.

Your words probably will not make any immediate difference, but they
will prey on his mind. Then, at some future point, when he is confronted
with some additional information, he may link the two. You have contributed
    to his possible future awakening.

If you try this again, try to be as tactful as possible, so that you get
in more information before he bolts.

Thanks Running Man. I really do appreciate the encouragement. When he left I was bummed but you have confirmed my hopes in that it may take some time to sink in...even years. Thanks

Hi UP :) That was very brave of you actually to takee him on. The newbies are the most fearsomely engrained with doctrine and hardest, I think to shake. But he will go to more studies and more calls and will hear those same things you said over and over and over. I dont think it will take years. His curiousity will get the best of him and he will maybe hit the internet or start looking at his own old literature in the hall library.

Once I started to REALLY doubt, even after being in 13 years, it was a quick exit :)
