Students Reported Killed, Hurt in Pennsylvania Attack (Update2)

By Todd Zeranski and Chris Dolmetsch

Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Several pupils were killed and others were wounded by a gunman at a one-room Amish school in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, state police said.

``A number'' of people were killed, including the gunman, police spokesman Gene Kukuk said in a telephone interview from Lancaster. Six deaths were reported by the Associated Press, citing the Lancaster County coroner.

Four students were taken to Lancaster General Hospital, where three were in critical condition, spokesman John Lines said. The condition of the fourth wasn't immediately determined.

The critically injured children will be flown to pediatric hospitals in Philadelphia and Hershey, Pennsylvania, Lines said.

The Amish school is in Bart, in southeastern Lancaster County, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of Philadelphia.

The Amish are a Christian religious sect that stress separation from the world. Many drive horses and buggies rather than cars and do not have electricity in their homes.

Amish children attend schools until eighth grade, according to the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau's Web page.

There are about 25,000 Amish in Lancaster County, the bureau said, citing Raber's 2004 Almanac.

They're saying on the news that he told ppl he was taking revenge on something that happened to him 20 years ago....that means when he was 12 years old, the same age as the kids he killed....who knows if that is true, hard to know with early reports.

Very, very tragic....seems like there's a new tragedy every day. :(

I have to wonder hat kind of demented pretzel logic allowed him to justify the murder of children who weren't even born until eight years after his personal trauma.

Note to self: if you go berserk, kill the damned perps, not innocent bystanders!

Truly sad. I just saw on the news that the man is believed not to be Amish. He was a truck driver but lived in the area where the Amish live. Seems it's related to something that happened 20 years ago and the revenge was on female students. He released all the boys and the adult teachers.

Not Amish but evidently had a 20 year old grudge against some Amish girls his own age back then...who would be adults today....doesn't seem that his family a clue about his feelings of revenge. But then BTK's family didn't have a clue either.
