Pretty soon the Wacktower Society will be 'encoruaging' all the brothers to inculcate the mind of Jerhover in this matter and contemplate whether he would acquire stdy guides that aren't from the 'Slave Class.'

There used to be a website I would use to get all of the scriptures and references for all of the meetings. It was a great time saver as everything I needed for each study was prepared. I thought it was nice of the brothers and sisters who were doing this and I felt bad when the WTBTS's legal department wrote them to stop.

This is where I used to go, http://www.desinger.com/scriptures/.

    What the Society Said

    Dear Brother Desinger:
It has come to our attention that posted on your Web site are collections of unquoted scriptures from various publications taken from the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, copyrighted by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania ("Watch Tower"). Copyright infringement occurs when a person reproduces (by any means) and distributes copyrighted material without the copyright holder’s permission. This is true even if no profit is involved.
While we appreciate that you may have good intentions, as a matter of policy Watch Tower does not grant permission for its copyrighted material to be distributed as you are doing. Therefore, we request that you remove the aforementioned collections of scriptures from your Web site.
Please do not view this as a personal disapproval. Rather, this position is a policy that helps protect Watch Tower’s copyrights.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation and send an expression of our warm Christian love and greetings.
    Your brother,
(signature of an Associate General Counsel)

We can understand why the legal department would need to object. They have to avoid dilution of copyright even if there is no violation. Although I believe that these small excerpts are allowed by the principle of fair use, there's a higher principle that we follow. Jehovah told the Israelites not to eat pork and other foods. The Israelites didn't know why they couldn't eat them, but those who obeyed were protected and blessed. I don't know why the legal department doesn't want us to do this copying and pasting and formatting for the benefit of others. At the same time I hope that by obeying, we'll be protected from something that I know nothing about.

May Jehovah bless your efforts to grow closer to him!

I used to go to the same site as truth.ceeker. Also, there was similar KM material published in the US a while back - I guess it was "worse" here. Everyone was disappointed because those compilations made it so much easier to study for the meetings and make comments, given how much studying JWs have to do. While some said that we needed to research stuff on our own, no one mentioned that fact that, without such compiled information, some people wouldn't get a chance to study at all.

I wrote to the owner of the site at one point, suggesting a possible compromise: providing a list of scriptures from the meeting parts which could be cut-and-pasted into the CD search to at least compile a listing of scriptures for the Watchtower meeting and such. I never got a response.

I've seen them and had a couple. A sister from another hall would compile all the information on the computer and then get ring bound copies made. Nice books. Made it super easy to take with you on vacation, doctor appointments, etc.

I found last year that a book binding company in Canada, i think, sold them for around US $16.00. The company specializes in rebinding old books and binding The Reasoning book and bible together, Leather binding songbooks, etc.

This was in the northern U.S. that I saw this. Many in surrounding congregations ordered them from others that were making them for around $20.00. You didn't have to bring so many books to meeting any more! What a load lifter! You would think the society would print them and reap the profits. It made so much sense to have them.

    Respectfully yours,

It was a great timesaver and I learned more from those sites. I hated when they were asked to shut down.

The WBTS has a copyright on the bible????

Copyright is intended to protect the way a concept is presented, not the concept itself.

The bible, as a concept, is not subject to copyright, largely since copyright law didn't exist when the originals were written and in any case it would have LONG since expired.

However any particular edition of the bible is protected by copyright law; therefore the Watchtower Society has copyright of the New World Translation, just as any other publisher of other bible translations retains copyright of theirs.
