Lost a Good Friend Today

The former owner of the newspaper I work for died today of cancer. He was a tall, handsome man just past 50, with a great smile and sense of humor.

He hired me to work here four years ago, and we had a great time together. Two years ago he sold the paper for a substantial sum, and was in the enviable position of being a young man and no longer having to work for a living. He could do what he pleased. He planned a new career in fine art photography.

Within a month, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He had one lung 2/3 removed, and things seemed fine. A few months later he was diagnosed with a tumor on the brain. That was removed, he had the therapies, and all seemed well. Then it reappeared.

He was in Boston undergoing very aggresive treatment, but not doing well. His quality of life sucked these last few months, but there seemed to be hope. Yesterday a lung collapsed, and he was taken to ICU. They discovered his lung was full of blood clots. His family, who'd made it to the hospital from all over the country, decided this morning to take him off life support. An hour or so later, he was dead.

Just a reminder to live every moment we have, because they can be fleeting.

Hey, Wes, you were a great guy and a good friend, and I'll miss you.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's a shame that he lost his life when he was supposed to be enjoying it to the fullest with no financial worries.

Life Is Grand

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend.

We always seem to spend our lives waiting for something bigger and better to come along, instead of just enjoying the wonderful things that we have today. Sometimes tomorrow never comes though...and we lose out on the chance to make the best of what we had.

Life and death sometimes just don't seem fair.
