Prayer Requests

Like I said, I think this prayer request thing is just a way of crying out for support.

What do you feel that they should ask for in this situation? Money? Most people need "support" from their friends when they're going through difficult times.

I think that you should ignore those post if they go against your religious beliefs or irritate you. Like Morpheus said to one of the characters after they said that they didn't believe Neo was the one, he said, "My beliefs doesn't require them to".

Or put in your signature line: I don't believe in prayer, so don't expect me to give you any prayer support when you ask for it.

No offense, but you suck. I love prayer requests. Why bash something harmless?

I'm on a lot of different boards besides xJW themed and the others have no religion connected to them at all....

but when you have decent people who can care about others, when someone is going through a struggle, many will offer to include them in their prayers. Now whether they really follow through and do it, or its just lip service I don't know. At the very least it gives them a feeling of support when they need it most.

Is that really such a bad thing to show compassion?

    Exactly.

Even if someone tells me they will pray for me or send good vibes, whatever, I will actually never know if they did this or not.....but it made ME feel good at that moment to have then let me know that THEY cared. How could this ever hurt anyone?

Maybe I'm the only one in the world that feels this way. When I read on those boards, no one ever says something like "My thoughts are with you", it always has to include prayer somewhere. I have no problem with someone expressing concern for another's situation, it's just prayer that gets me.

Recently I lost both my parents, they both died just a few weeks apart. So I very well understand how it feels to get support when you are hurting. I got only 1 or 2 comments about someone praying for me from non-JW's, since most everyone that knew them were JW's. I got quite a few "you'll see them in the paradise" from the JW's but most of the simply told me they were thinking about me or called me and asked how I was doing.

I guess the whole prayer thing to me is overused. People that aren't even religious and most likely don't pray even use it. I hear it all the time on local newcasts, it's become synonomous with an expression of concern. Maybe if I hadn't been made to go up on the platform and pray for the whole congregation for all those years it wouldn't bother me now.

    Hey Butters,

It's a good thing you told me not to take offense before you told me I suck, or I would have.

This is absolutely fascinating from a Western European standpoint. Here religious talk has completely vanished from the public space. Most believers would not be so open about it among themselves, out of formal church services -- there's a sense of propriety which make them say "I'll be thinking about you" even when they do mean praying.
