http://religiousmovements.lib.virginia.edu/profiles/listalpha.htm My hubby and I are thinking of going to a church.....It is about the right time for us. We were trying to figure out which religion is suited for us and he found this site. It is interesting that the description an JW's say that it is unusual that when people leave them....there is alot of resentment, unlike other religions.

I think it is due to the brainwashing....when you have believed something blindly, then discover you were decieved...it is worse than if you are a part of a religion where you can believe all they teach...or not. Also, the long-term effects on some lives from being shunned, ect.

BTW....we think a non-denominational is the way to go for us :)

Wouldn't it be best to ask which church teaches the truth rather than which church suits you. You make it sound like you are about to join a golf club.

Anyway good luck to you both. I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

If you found a bible based group where they don't pressure people in subtle psychological ways to conform then it's way better than the dubs, also good for some social life.

I don't know there really ius one absolute truth. Satifying our need for spiritual connection doesn't mean that we have to believe every word a religion teaches.

What if the many roads are all the various religions but the single path is what lies within us?

megs - go for it. You don't have to sign away your life for it. And if it doesn't meet your needs then by all means keep searching

The problem with these boards is that sometimes you (I) don't explain all the details and it ends up sounding like we are trying to join a golf club.... So, what we are looking for is a church that focuses on the Bible and doesn't make you join them or agree with all they say. I have done all kinds of reseach and I am not looking for a group to tell me what to think....rather looking for some good ol Bible studies with a group....because I do miss the social aspects of being in a group and learning.

Yeah, i think a lot of us are mad because we discovered that we were being used, lied to, mislead, etc.

I was a churchgoing christian for 2 yrs, post wt. The church experience is a good transition from the wt, imo, the less strict they are, the better. You can recieve a lot of 'positive vibes' in churches. However, don't go for the carrots they dangle, ie, miracles, god paying back 10 times the money you give, converting the whole world, etc.

Ps, i don't deny that miracles are possible. It's just that they are very rare.

Non-denominational churches do not have the 'checks and balances' in their teachings that denominations have, but you have to go where you feel love and are comfortable. I'm not saying that a non cannot be a good church, but be aware of the difference.

I'm not mad. Just sad. For me, anger requires a perception of fault, and it's hard for me to directly fault anybody for what's happened with the Witnesses--it's way bigger than any one person and it is a self-sustaining phenomenon at this point.

I vote for going to a BIG church where you can hide in the numbers and listen and learn and go unnoticed and unpressured until you decide.

In little churches, I have found, they glom onto new people quickly and firmly, and personally it freaked me out really bad after being a JW. "Have you found a CHURCH HOME yet SISTER???" the pastor says....not letting go of my hand...

    What does that even mean?
