>> How does this differ from celebrating a wedding anniversary? They split hairs again.
It's TOTALLY arbitrary. Amazing we didn't implode from all the conflicting foolishness we were asked to accept.
Or perhaps we did, eh? ;-)

Dear Becca,
You have got to be kidding me!! Now that my blinders are off I can clearly see this type of crap is done to keep the rank and file "different" from everyone else, even if there is no scriptural backing! Oh how this kind of stuff angers me!! What a perfect example of their complete control. Wouldn't want therank and file to use their conscience or anything!!
Thank you for your post.
Sincerely,
Lady Liberty

After reading the rest of the posts I wanted to ask, how is celebrating a baby or bridal shower any different?? You are showering that new infant, and or the bride, putting them honor and gifts.
It doesn't make sence that you can shower a new baby on its birth, with gifts, a cake and celebration, celebrating its birth. Yet one year later, you cannot celebrate it again in the same manner. It does not make sence!
Sincerely,
Lady Liberty

And wouldn't want the rank and file to spend anymore time with their "worldly" family members than is absolutely necessary, either. I gotta wonder how much of this "don't celebrate [x]" garbage is just meant to keep the jw's away from their non-jw relatives.
If not "meant" to do so, it certainly serves that purpose.
(After I got out of the bOrg, my dad told me that my mom cried every year on Mother's Day when she didn't get a card or phone call or anything. B@stards...)

I think Almost has it right - from a non-JW point of view - the WT has managed to list all the days/reasons/ family/loved ones could possible get together or create some kind of tradition and turn it into something "evil". Something that would get their god ANGRY and JEALOUS. The less time spent with non-Jws, family or otherwise, the better. It is also an excellent way of keeping "estranged" family members away. What if a heart-felt mother's day card arrives out of the blue from a df'd daughter/or the other way round for a birthday, and if it opened the door to forgiveness, love, any type of dialogue. That could be dangerous for WT. CULTS SUCK !!
