Honesty, did only the one elder know that you, a vocal ex-JW, were going to be there. Wasn't it just the one...did "he" not tell the other elder. I'm surprised any elders would meet for a bible discussion with someone viewed as an apostate. Why didn't the other one stay?

JWs will attack other literature, usually trashing its source, as being "apostate", from "false religion", "worldly", or from the internet. They don't know what to do when confronted with their own literature. The "new light" excuse can only cover so much shit before it becomes ridiculous, and most of them know it deep down.

I asked the friend that told me I was invited if the elders knew my name but he said he wasn't sure. After they left, I found out that they only knew that someone who had once been a JW was invited. Maybe they thought they could 'help' a stray sheep get back into the fold. My name wasn't mentioned until I introduced myself to one of the Christians I hadn't met before. If the elders had known it was me, they probably would have declined to attend since I have assisted several local JW's go to Jesus in prayer and accept His free gift of everlasting life. I don't know why the other one left with Doug. I guess he was just following Doug's lead. I have a feeling that my friend, Tony wanted to let the other two guys see how JW's really feel about 'stray sheep'.

It appears you are spot on. They about had a BM when I started putting Bound Volumes, Insight Books, Live Forever, Babylon the Great, Harp of God, Kingdom Interlinear, Worldwide Security Under The Prince of Peace, Green NWT, Brown Reference NWT and a few other Watchtower jewels on the table.

I was under the asssumption that my name was mentioned because the elder I know squirmed when asked if it was OK if a person who had been a JW could attend. Evidently he was squirming because if he said that JW's shun former JW's he would have had a lot of explaining to do. My friend, Joe told me that he had no idea former JW's were viewed as being spiritually dead when I explained Doug's behavior was due to his loyalty to what the WT teaches about former members.

I'm not surprised then at the one elder's reaction. I don't think it was the publications but rather his comprehending completely your identity. So his leaving was due to that not the publications. The other elder was not very considerate for not sharing all the facts with him. I wonder what kind of conversation they had on the way home? I wonder how that will affect his status with the other elders?
I have found it more productive to just let non-JWs or even willing JWs read for themselves what is in the WT publications...hang them with their own words.

Wow. Let us know if there's a follow-up return visit from those elders. Might they try to talk to your friend if they get him alone? Or are they scared away permanently? I think they must wonder somewhere deep down why they have to be so afraid.
