I must say that Dean Martin's version is pretty wonderful too. Bing and Dean did a duo also that is wonderful.

I have Christmas music on my mind, and wifey is now wanting to find a church in the area with a large pipe organ. We just watched a xmas video that featured one - I would like to see one too. Us dubs were a sheltered lot - our music was all cassette player, and the musical scores were poor.

Bing Crosby all the way for White Christmas.

When we belonged to the Methodist church before we became JWs, they had beautiful Christmas programs. They had the pipe organ Jeff. Nothing like it!! And the choir and whole 9 yards. And to think I used to co-teach Sunday School. Boy I wished I would have stayed put. But they were always asking for money and never used the Bible. Never did I think that the JWs would become like them. 21 years wasted. ugh....

Enjoy the music. Oh yeah, Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire by Nat King Cole. Yes!!

Don't forget to watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation w/Chevy Chase and the classic Christmas movies. My granddaughter who is 3 cries when she listens to Louis Armstrong's "It's a Wonderful World". Isn't that moving?

Best to you and your wife!

    I'm w/ hambeak.

I love Holiday Inn, the movie that has the song in it. I believe it is when it was first written and sung. I love that movie. I have fond memories of sitting in our den and watching all the holiday movies with my mom, the fire blazing and us watching the movie. We also watched The Bells of St. Mary, Going My Way and White Christmas. But my fav has always been Holiday Inn. I love old black and white movies. One time, during the holidays, we had a contest, how many kingdom hall songs we knew by heart and how many holiday songs we knew by heart. We took turns, my mom, my gramps and me. I won, by knowing the most of both. What stands out in my mind, we all knew more christmas songs then kingdom hall songs. I still think it is hysterical to think of three "strong" JWs sitting around singing christmas songs at the top of their lungs. I sure it would have been frowned upon, but oh well.

Looking Glass - I loved that story. I used to sing Xmas songs in the car when no one could hear. I always liked "Feliz Navidad".

As far as b/w Xmas movies go - how can we leave out "It's a Wonderful Life"? The scene where Jimmy Stewart runs down the street screaming hello to the buildings and all the people is unforgettable.

I want to 'roast some chestnuts on an open fire' - do people still do that?

Thanx for the nice thoughts Juni. Always the kind thought, that one she has. [Bad Yoda impression huh?]

The prob w/ Its a Wonderful Life, is its like candy that you have eaten too much of, you get sick on it. There was that one year that Fox (in Chicago) played the movie for 24 hours straight. After that, I could not watch it anymore. The sound of the little girl's voice "teacher says ..." is like nails on a chalk board.

I love the old musicals. So Holiday Inn was a combination of it all. And I love Bing Crosby's voice. It was like butta.

    Feliz Navidad

is a good one and is the only christmas song not in english I know. I think that will be my next trick. Learn all kinds of christmas songs in a different language that way I can sing them in front of a few of my black & white/dye in wool JW family and they will never know. I may just teach them a few. My mom would think it was funny, but the rest of the headcases would not.

I saw White Christmas when I was 8 and promptly fell in love with Danny Kaye. I loved Rosemary Clooney and she led me down another path of music not common to an 8-year-old.

I have always loved Christmas music. My grandma did too and taught me all the piano music. My husband and I went to his in-law's small church one year and stunned them all by our singing (and that I knew all the Xmas songs). I can sing many of them in German. Silent Night was originally composed in German and who can forget O Tannenbaum.

My favorite rendition is my own but I have Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and Dean Martin all singing their version as well.

How man songs are there that are winter but not Christmas songs?

    Jingle Bells

    Winter Wonderland

    Let it Snow

    Sleigh Ride

I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm

    Baby, It's Cold Outside

    Jingle Bell Rock

    Frosty the Snowman

Let There Be Peace on Earth

(can you think of other winter songs that don't mention Christmas)

Bing Crosby, and then Elvis, which I think was the version played in the movie "Home Alone".

I heard an interesting story on the radio regarding Bing Crosby's stardom. He seemed to have benefitted from the new "high fidelity" recording where for the first time deep, rich singing voices could come from a record. Higher pitched, belting Al Jolson types were out.
