Interesting post. But I was wondering what the differences were between a JC and what Jews did way back.

Ok - sorry I did not understand.

The Jewish elders would meet in the city gates. They sometimes handled matters of a judicial nature. That is where the comparison ends.

They did so in the open forum, airing differences and matters of law to all onlookers. No three or five man committee was formed. No secret councils to decide life and death matters behind closed doors. The accused knew his accusers and charges against him immediately. No Watchtower volumes that defined, redefined, and re-redefined lawcode. No attempt to read hearts - just the facts please.

Franz treats the subject as well as I have seen it covered in Crisis of Conscience, Chapter 11, The Misuse of Disfellowshipping. IMO

Jeff I agree with you I was reviewing that part of the book again today and that is what prompted this topic. I think also maybe because of the level of responsibility that Ray and Rene had the GB was fearful of losing their almighty power.

Since I was still in the complying mode in my early 20's, I went to my meeting. There were actually 2 of them, each 3 long hours. I was asked very personal questions. In the end, they said that they felt that I was sorry, but that I didn't feel sorry towards Jehovah and they felt that DFing me for 6 months would remedy that. They were very clear that they hoped I would want to meet with them after 6 months to discuss my reinstatement.

During that time I switched cong since i had moved about 15 miles away. 6 months came and I wrote a letter to the elders in my new cong. Note that I was going to every meeting, etc. during the 6 months. The new elders said they never reinstate someone after 6 months in their cong and that they never would have DFed someone for just a 6 month period they would have only reproved them. Well there I was stuck and really upset.

There's more to that story, but this part concerns this thread.

To anyone who hasn't listened to this yet, check out watchtower.cc (For some reason, it's not letting me put the complete link, but go to watchtower.cc and go to the very bottom, under Sick of Lies' Conversations with Elders). It's the experience of a guy (who is a member of this site) who decided to try and get disfellowshipped, and tape as much as possible. This afternoon I just listened to the JC and there was a clear message throughout: you can ask questions, but if you question the Society, or ask too many questions, you are an apostate. Period. It's an educational series of recordings, especially for someone like myself who's never been grilled.

hambeak, I haven't but my son was. He said they ask him , If there was anyway he could be wrong and my son told them "Yes, and there are four of you, surely one of you can show me." One of them said "No, we can't, you have done too much research." And another one said "That's not what we're here for." Then they DF him for apostasy. I tried to get my son back in and the more I tried, I begin to see the Organization was a cult. Been out now for about 3 years and the elders came to see one time about 2 years ago. I haven't heard from them since.

I think there is an automatic editing feature on JWD that prohibits an actual link to the site. Even so, I've found the site myself and still am having trouble finding the info there.

You can find links to the audio tape and the full original accompanying JWD discussion with Sick of Lies himself here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/member/22041/topics/3.ashx (Topics - Partial)

There's a video, too but I haven't been able to see it (only heard the audio portion of it)

(PS: Tigerman - you have a pm)

edited by AudeSapere to completely remove the link - sorry, mods... wasn't thinking...!

That's good, so you can get the full story from the topics. I messed up about where to go--actually go to Quad-central.com and do a wordsearch for Sick of Lies. That'll get you straight to the good stuff.

I know by personal experience and the experiences of close friends, that elders have come to a point of asking very, very intimate questions when it comes to Committe meeting for either fornication, loose conduct or adultery. They even ask how many times it happened, what you were wearing, whether there was o**l s*x, who was on top, who started it, and things like that. I am not exagerating. They seem to think that being elders, gives them the right to invade your privacy in a way that is almost embarassing. If you went to them, it means you were repentant in the first place. Pertinent questions to see whether or not it was premeditated is different from just wanting you to relate in detail a porn movie.
