I know this might sound like a very unusual questions but I was recently talking to a ex-jw's girl at my school and she made a very good point that I had never thought of. She said that Christians and JW's try to impose "guilt and fear" in their members by constantly comparing what the Apostles and early Christians suffered such as "beheadings, nail to crosses, burned alive, thrown to lions" and all sorts of horrible things. She said they never just encourage you to serve God and Jesus without their being a hidden Doom and gloom message. It is always "serve Jesus or you will burn in hell" or Jehovah will destroy you at Armaggeddon. My schoolmate is right. Everytime you just want some spirituality it always turns into a threat of retribution. My friend said she will never step foot inside a church or Kingdom Hall again.
Do you feel that "Christians and JW's" try to impose "guilt" on members

Your friend is right I believe they all use a lot of scare tactics. What ever happened to Jesus two commandments that you love god first and love each other as he loved us? Hate and fear is not a family value

Not ALL Christians try to shove religion down your throat.
I know many people who are Catholic, Anglican, United, etc that never say a word unless you ask.
Generalizing to any group as a whole is unfair to the thousands who believe but don't see it as their mission to convert the world

Well, the jws have been using scare tactics to keep their members in line for years, and are constantly trying to guilt them into doing more, giving more etc. I wouldn't know if other religions do this, but I imagine it is standard cult tactics, so some no doubt do.

Must be nice to have others striving to live up to your standards and accept your defintions of their behavior without question as God's.
That's all i can say.

Fear is the tool of totalitarian societies. You can find it anywhere from Nazi and communist governments to cults like j-dubs. It is characterized by complete surrender of oneself to an abstract idea which is imprinted in their mind as something grander than themselves. As strange as it sounds, in these environments people even may feel that that idea gives them context and purpose for their own living.
So I’m not surprised that individuals there are ready to ignore and suppress their own consciences as a sign of weakness (among jdubs spiritual weakness) and do not recognize it as inherently human traits that differentiates us from animals.
Come to think of it, even animals show much better traits at least toward their own kind than people who allowed themselves to be molded by fear of community they are part of.J-dubs went even a step further in justifying their fear machine by describing it through an expression I never heard anywhere else. A HEALTHY FEAR toward god. Ask any psychiatrist if there is such a thing. I doubt it.

I do feel the core of christian doctrine is fear, fear about what will happen if you don't beleive and obey. Fear is a big motivater to get people not to question and just accept.
Once you fear the diety, then guilt over haveing committed an offensive act that displeases the diety can come into being. Either way it is all designed to keep one in bondage mentally thru appeal to our fears of death and pain. Can anyone say "mind control" 2000yrs and lasting.
