We would have dessert on the holidays with the relatives-how weird is that? Couldn't have dinner though! We also got "not Christmas presents" usually around the 26th -Jan 1st. Depending on mom's mood and payday, I think. My mom once bought some snoopy xmas ornaments to use for 'winter' decoration. I don't remember her actually using them, but that was the justification. Looking back now, I wonder if she might have been wavering in her JW convictions?

Halloween was skate night(but that or bowling was a lot of sundays for the kids in the cong. anyhow) Valentines and Easter were summarily ignored. We spent a lot of 4th of July's with relatives. Or camping with relatives. The only 'Christmas' presents we got from relatives was the mandarin oranges from my gramma. Which we all adore to this day. It is funny, when I was a kid, we got the one box from gramma, my mom never bought others. We buy them as long as we can, now, and eat them like candy. Maybe they were too much $$$.

I used to go to a "gathering" at a brother and sister's home on Christmas Day, and we used to have turkey. Of course, it wasn't a party, and the turkey was just food.

My jw comes to Christmas at my relatives, do you suppose only his plate is 'not a Christmas' plate of food? I wonder if he will try to wiggle out this year, hmmm....

A dub friend always had a Not a Thanksgiving Dinner for various other single sistahs in the congo. She usually got a free turkey from someplace because she was on some sort of low income list (hmm, college degree but she worked cleaning houses). We'd gather up the kids and our sweet potatos or pie and head over to Sister B's house. WhooHoo!

As we ate turkey and dressing, we discussed how this was NOT celebrating anything. The turkey was free, we were all conveniently off work, some of us had gone out in service that very morning and placed 10 magazines, 2 books and started a Bible study...and we would ALL for sure be at the meeting that night. Praise Jah!

    This thread is cute OUTLAW.

This was common even in our ultra conservative cong.! But they always had to clarify that this was not a Christmas/Thanksgiving dinner.

Christmas Bonus checks were accepted readily by people. There were those that would not accept it - it had to be called a bonus check for a job well done in order for them to accept it.

Other elders ate b/day cake at work while their kids were taught to sit out the b/days in school. The idiotic hypocrits! Poor kids. How do I know this? Happened at my husband's place of employment.

It only gets better!..LOL!!..Accepting "Not a Christmas Bonus"..Another good point brought up:the manditory "We`re not celebrating Christmas conversation,at the Not a Christmas Turkey Dinner".I love how everyone participates in this conversation with a mouthfull of "Not A Christmas Turkey Dinner!..LOL!!....Birthdays are good too..My relatives go to the birthday partys of none JW relatives because it`s a family gathering(LOL!!)..Then they eat the birthday cake, but it`s not a birthday cake because they don`t celebrate birthdays..It dosen`t matter the birthday cake says:"Happy Birthday!"..Got to love the "Not a Thanks Giving Turkey Dinner"..Or "Turkeys are cheaper this time of year."...OUTLAW
