You have to be lacking in the thinking department to become a JW- and that is what they need to reason their way out. Most of them are trapped in the Borg by their own brain.
I agree with you that often the JW's don't treat the social misfits in their congo very well. I've seen that a number of times over the years.
She is to be pitied, not ridiculed. Shame on all who mocked her.
I too have known many like her. They are contemptible and mistreated--the amharets of the Witness world. The true measure of any culture or or nation or group or organization is how they treat their most helpless individuals. Do the Witnesses fail this test? They would say no.
I don't think there's a single answer to that question. I've been to congregations that functioned as wonderful, supportive social networks, propping up the weak and caring for the needy and elderly. I've gone to others (like my current) that are hellholes of self-interest and misogyny.

Maybe there are some caring congregations, but I suspect that image is propped up by the unceasing work of a concerned few. In my old cong, the elderly were picked up reguarly for meetings, and the sick were visited and assisted. However, about 5 out of our 80+ membership actually did the work. My parents were one of the few who knocked themselves out for many years assisting, driving, and cooking for needy cong members.
Now that they are themselves old and sick, they are virtually ignored. A few JWs call them regularly, but almost none visit, drive, cook or assist them. If not for the fact that me and my exJW, apostate siblings care for them, they would be almost completely isolated and ignored.
What a great thread. Mind if I interject here with a schizo dub story from my childhood? Kathy wouldn't always take her meds, and when she didn't she was prone to yelling in the back of the KH about how the speaker was speaking for the devil, or during a prayer, she would start muttering about how she hated the speaker and what he was saying. She would take communion at the memorial and sit in the middle of the row so the brothers couldn't pry the glass away from her. She hated my dad too when she was off her meds and one day my dad was taking the CO out in service, and they saw her on the street in the territory (near where she lived). My dad was trying to be suave and introduce the CO to a member of the WWB, and Kathy screamed at my dad and threatened to rip his balls off if he came near. It was shocking to the CO, but my dad just attributed her behavior to no meds, instead of what could have just been outspoken honesty.
I also enjoyed the picture of the ozone layer. Sign of the end-times for sure!

Absolutely. In my observation, the kindnesses extended by a few are a reflection of their personal values, not any organized, comprehensive effort directed by congo administrators.
Good stuff Uncle Bruce - you're becoming JWD's ace roving reporter what with your camera at the ready and all. Are Cairn Terriers called Cairns Terriers in Oz btw
Hi Uncle!
It is a cairn terrier like Toto in the Wizard of Oz.
Feel sorry for the poor woman. What did happen to the help for widows and orphans that Jesus spoke about? I agree Bizzy Bee. There are those ones who do help out those that have the need, but it comes from their heart not from "mother".
