Hi SammieswifeI was only expecting the feature documentary when I sent in my order. The Smalley and Brumley and Jared Hardie stuff was all a bonus in my mind.
I just found more on the DVD and watched it. There's a segment watching Witness New York City street corner proselytizers at work and another feature with the two film directors being interviewed on camera.
I watched "KNOCKING" DVD

On Tuesday, May 22, "Knocking" will air nationwide on PBS' "Independent Lens" series. Academy Award-nominee Terrence Howard ("Crash" and "Hustle & Flow") will host.v

Thanks for bringing this up. I have been receiving PBS order catalogs for the past 6 months, and they have yet to show them in their catalog.

The payoff for this work is NOT in the made for TV portion, but in the extras. The real payoff is in the extras. Buy the CD.
It's my impression the Watch Tower Society had heavy editing input on the study guide but not so heavy on the video, and obviously much less on the extras. For me, the video accurately shows the Witnesses as whacky bigoted fanatics.
The extras are very interesting to me. They include lengthy interviews with vice president Smalley, attorney Brumley, and HLC heavy Hardie. That's a LOT of on the record statements.
The video's not a pro Witness Office of Public Information fluff piece. If it is, they messed it up bad.
Obviously the producers had to guarantee a "fair" if not complementary piece in order to get a HLC member, the Society's top attorney, and the Society's vice president to agree to lengthy interviews. The interviews are a valuable source for quotes, and are nothing you or I could have ever gotten.
I like the piece. I don't have any problem with the study guide. It was nice of them to provide a pdf. I like the made for TV part of the video. I think it'll come in very handy. I like the extras a LOT. The interview with Rabbi Michael Berenbaum is priceless. Anyone defending the Witness's stand in Nazi Germany needs to watch that segment. A fluff piece definitely would have left out all of Berenbaum. -

I watched the video last weekend with an old timer who call Bethel "The Vatican" but is adamant that it is "The Truth" I guess he figures
it is as good as any religion. We also watched with another couple, elder and wife. I thought the video was well produced. The elderly holocaust
survivor was quite compelling. The liver transplant patient was very sympathetic. The history of the WItnessess section was very glossed over.
I saw nothing controversial about the history such as Pyramidology, 1874, the Millerite beleifs.
What I did find very compelling, and this from someone still in, is that when a staightforward view of the religion is presented it really
seems WHACKY!!!! Holy cow! If I had not known it was about the JW religion, I would have said : WHo the f---- are those oddballs? As it is,
the oddballs are me. Thanks Gary!

The other thing a fluff piece would have completely left out is the notation of the failed 1914 generation doctrine with the Watch Tower picture with caption that noted the change in 1995.
