It is also quite common for people who have joined abusive groups like the JWs to describe their life prior to becoming a JW as terrible. My mother does this with her family. You might find my podcast on this topic rather interesting, I think we talk about this on there. Here is the link to the podcast:

Oh god - I am so mental. I have been on anti-anxiety or anti-depressants since I was 17. My doctor has always felt it was situational rather than biological. Situational - due to the stress and bullshit from the religion that impacted me directly (rumours, gossip) and indirectly (my parents being 3rd generation controlling whack-jobs). Btw, every member of my immediate family is on some kind of anti-depressant.

A relative of mine recently went to a shrink about marriage problems. This relative was raised a JW and is married to a JW. The relative mentioned that she is no longer a JW and the shrink asked her if something unusal was going on with the JW religion recently because the shrink has taken three patients in the last month that are having mental issues with their religion.
Is this just a coincidence? What are the chances in a city of a million people with hundreds of shrinks picking up a total of 4 Jw's in one month. Is it possible that 10% of JW's are going to shrinks? And if 10% are smart enough to get professional help - how many are just struggling to deal with problems on their own? 1 out of 5?

"Jozhiemer`s Disease"..
I've seen the symptoms of this disease:
Don't have to be responsible for your own happiness.
Don't have to be responsible for your children's upbringing. Just haul 'em before the elders for discipline.
All decisions are made for you. When in doubt, call the elders.
Don't worry about communicating with your spouse or family. If you have to, the answer is always, "because the organization said....."
If the above won't apply, the correct answer is "wait on Jehovah".
If your family doesn't acknowledge the above, don't talk or associate with them until they do.
Stay away from second hand sales, blue smurfs, and the internet.
I know there's more, just can't think of them all!

I think people have to be mentally ill to some degree to be lured into or stay in, if born into this cult. It's like having someone who is very charming, putting his/her hand into your pocket and taking your wallet while they tell you, "Pay no attention. I'm taking your wallet. When I walk away, you won't remember you ever had a wallet." And of course, you allow them to take your wallet, walk away and you forget you ever had a wallet.
