You mentioned the room not having much light. Maybe you could hang a mirror instead. Especially if it picks up the reflection form a window. A grouping of small mirrors is an intersting alternative also. Don't forget to add texture to the room for interest( wicker, wrought iron, fabric, etc.) Group decorative items in odd numbers. Repeat colors and textures at least three times around the room for continuity. Wish I could come help you, I love decorating!

    Hambeak,

my friend and I went to a starving artist sale over the summer and both found some wonderful original oil paintings for a fraction of what you would normally pay retail. Artists sell their old stock like this. Contact your local art gallery or art society or look in the paper for these sales. Up here in Boston they are usually in the spring or summer. I liked the experience so much I am going again this year for a new work of art to put in my bedroom. Good luck! Lilly

P.S. If possible, always look for art that is signed by the artist. You never know when you can buy a piece from an artist and his/her career takes off in the future. You can have a valuable piece on your hands. Lilly

I once found an art student whose work I liked and asked him to paint a mural on my wall. He welcomed the opportunity to paint on emulsioned white plaster and all I gave him was a bottle of cognac and some rolling tobacco to cover the materials. I wish I'd had a picture of it but the people who bought the place from me loved it! Charity shops are good and also people who do house clearances. Not sure if these two avenues are as lucrative in the US. You could also hang a rug on the wall. There's middle eastern rugs but you have tons of great native american designs over there don't you?

    Have fun,

I would pick some prints by a favorite artist and have them blown up to the size you want at a local photography shop.

That is what I was thinking in fact restrangled whole idea lit my fire.

You know who is most excellent at mixing it up? Hemplover. She is the bomb! I don't mind helping, but I need to see what you like first. What are you aiming for? See being from the SW, I would hate to shock you with my color taste. Heck even my home is not done how I wantit. It always gets on my nerves. I do love the stuf I seee at World Market. I go there for ideas and then make it happen on a shoestring. (nobody should have to pay those prices.) If you are serious, let me know and we can take a look.

Serious though Hemplover is SO good at this.

    • If you favor a particular artist or style, allposters.com has it well, all.

Breathtaking images of outer space, if that's your thing.

    National Geographic, self-explanatory.

    • On a canvas, arrange "found" things... leaves and branches, or nuts and bolts, for example, and spray or splatter paint over them... when dry remove the thingies. You can underpaint the canvas so the reverse images don't all need to be white.

    • An arrangement of beat-up, empty picture frames from garage sales... all sizes and shapes... spray paint in metallic colors... shiny gold can look tacky but think bronze, copper, verdigris. You can start with a few and just keep adding over time. Put little ones inside larger ones, or make a sunburst pattern. You could flow a wavy trail from the living room into the dining area to tie those together.

    • Jazz/blues, or beer/wine, or ethnic festivals often produce lively and colorful posters each year, sometimes free for the taking.

    • Maps... AAA members can get all sorts of maps...cut 'em up and have fun. If you have traveled a lot you can put big pushpins or stars where you've been. Or show the path from where you were born and locations you've lived, attended school, etc. and where you and your partner's lives intersected.

    • Have some personal photos scanned and blown up at Kinko's. They have wide-format, high-resolution printers.

    • Or, hang a quilt. Textiles always add warmth.
