I think more are born into a religion rather then just joining...

The Tower uses fear, shame and guilt in order to keep their membership, if they did not have those things in their favor they would have no membership well, maybe just a small remnant....lol

So many on the DB are 2nd & 3rd generation JW's..they were joined at birth....it is their so called inheritance. Taught that their treasured inheritance would come by putting faith in an organization, an organization that would be able to give each member what they would deserve..... life for being obedient or death for being disobedient.

This is probably the reason for membership in many religions....People are just born into it. It is easier to tag along. Brainwashed at birth.

    Victor,

if people join a religion to transcend their humanity, and there are so many religions, and so many people that are religious, do you believe it to be a natural part of human nature to desire to transcend the human experience? If so, why?

Excellent questions, here is my take.
The tower catered to this need when they used words and metaphors such as "Gods fellow workers". In my own experience, I even pioneered for several years where the need was great, why? There were days my JW activities took me to another level of existence to get in touch with my total altruistic divine nature. Our core essense is of a spiritual nature, we hunger to access and stay connected to that nature. The paradox is that the JW religion keeps us from actually geting in touch with our true nature and when we do or did we developed compasion for ourselves and others. This of course removed the blinders the JW theology imposed upon us.

As for those whom are born into a religion they may switch in their life course due to not feeling that need filled. On one level they may feel disatisfaction or disdain for their religion of birth so they go in search of a religion that can lead them to experience transcendtal states of being. In my experience I was raised a Catholic but gave that up due to the great mysticism and great ritual that I saw as twaddle to feed my spirit. MY truth is we are spirit beings having a human experience.

Many XJW don't know of where else to turn.

Many seek a relationship with Jehovah and Jesus but have nver seen too many XJWS who are not involved with gross immorality, matriealism or just full of hate and reagfe for the Wt. I know many who turn to non Christian, pagan based or new age religions.

Unfortuatly many Churches and Pasor don't know how to deal with XJWS.

Many Websites are filled with rage hate for the WT and lack pointing to Jesus. No wonder why the Wt appears true!

I almost went back myself. I love Jehovah but had a hard time reading the Bible without the Wt interpattion of it.

What you describe is human beings that have been defrauded religiouslly and spiritually and who suffer from emotional wounds.
Some spend years redefining their identity and some never do.

There are many paths and many truths, we must start our own spiritual path wherever it takes us.

In my experience wounded people do not need another preacher to preach guilt shame and fear as an antidote for the watchtower. A skilled therapist will do greater good than an unskilled well intentioned preacher.

Many former JWs including yours truly, have spent a small fortune in time, energies, and resources to help themselves and we want to find meaning to our past experience as well as educate others to avoid making the same mistakes we did. We want our past painful experience to not be in vain. If we can help one other person than it was worth it.

You had your path to follow, and your creator led you to be where you needed to be. Amen

i felt the same way when it happened, but someone older, wiser and kinder calmed me down.....I can't wait until the day that I can wake up without fear of dying forever because of my sins-and the abuse from the old "friends and family" never ends...

Sorry, but I can't endorse the fact that all paths lead to God, because it is not true. If this were true then Jesus did not have to die for us.

Major reason why people return is because they are looking to Serve theTrue God and his Son Jesus. They see many XJWS live very immoral lives, hating the Wt and just like yourself belive in a New Age concept "all paths lead to God so don't offend anyone." No wonder why the JW who snaps to their senses, goes back!

I am not just followe a path. but telling JW their only source of real hope, which is Jesus.

I never said all pahts lead to God....I said there are many paths and many truths and we must choose our own path and our own truths.

You assume wrong, I believe in nothing that gives me the freedom to believe what works for me.

No wonder why the JW who snaps to their senses, goes back!

    Maybe yes maybe no.

I am not just followe a path. but telling JW their only source of real hope, which is Jesus.

If Jesus works for you, all the power to you, whatever floats your boat. If I choose to believe God is a piece of green cheese on the back of the moon and that works for me, I hope you can have the same respect for my belief.

I am sorry, but the old 'Oh, many xJW's are so embittered and angry they can't find consolation in our Lord Jesus' is insulting.

xJW theists would be equally insulted if I said "Oh, many xJW's have a need to believe so strong that they have to find another religous belief to cling to'.

And the nice 'I respect people no matter what their beliefs' is a crock too.

The 'oh no, only if you live this way will you be saved' approach is just someone failing to learn from the mistakes of the past.

I don't believe in god, but am continually amazed at how flawed and small-minded a definition of god is held by those who do believe in god.

I think some people believe in downright stupid and even dangerous things. Why should I respect that? Yeah, it's their right, but respect whack jobs who kill themselves so the UFO people can take them away? Respect intolerant right-wing 'Christians'? Respect people who carry out violence in the name of some god? I think not!

I respect people who have rebuilt their belief system from the ground up. If someone can demonstrate that they have dilligently pursued truth, whatever that is to them, even if it's not the same as my truth, I'll respect that provided they do no harm to their fellow man and respect others' rights to self-determination.

Keep on rocking in the free world...
