Why is it so many Men agree to take on the Position of an Elder?

Is it possible too, that women push their husbands to take these positions? I ask because my father already had a high end job in charge of many men. He was at his limit when he accepted the Elder position. He was exhausted before he ever got started.

He was in charge of huge jobs such as the redo of the Chicago Theatre, White Sox Park, the Twin Towers in Chicago and also all overpasses over the major highways.

It seems unfair that it is requested of the males in the WBTS that they take over all the mental and emotional problems of the flock (basically created by the GB) plus be required to give talks, run meetings, and meet with every tattler in the hall.

Yes, in many instances the wives viewed it as a status symbol too. I never wanted to be an elder in the first place, I knew that once I was baptized I would be pressured to be a MS, and then an Elder. I knew they wouldnt leave me alone just to be a regular rank and file JW. Im so glad I never got baptized.----Dave

Here is one more question to add to the mix....An elder is someone who has experienced life. Raised kids, may even have grandkids. Isn't this the definition of an "Elder"?

A man who is possibly retired, lived life, understands different stages, understands problems in marriages through his own experience, understands development stages in kids, etc.

So when they recruit these younger fellows, how in the He** do they justify it?

Indeed...locally to both Dawn and I a new PO has been announced who cannot be more than 35/36?

Wouldnt mind but when he was 20ish his nocturnal activities were considerably questionable...even in comparison to my own.

Its Jehovahs holy spirit at work again you see!

Prior to being appointed, it was put to me that as I qualified, how could I not accept the position? At 23 or so I was honoured! Put that way how could one refuse?

If you have a good education , one can rise to a position of power and authority and prestige. Most JW men are not educated and have NFC of rising to such a position. Being a congregation elder allows uneducated men to get to a position of power and prestige. It is as simple as that

I was a pioneer, an MS, and had many responsibilities. 99% of my reason for doing it was for approval from other men and from potential marriage partners.

    Because it's the Watchtower philosophy...

Do more, so we can give you more to do!

That is the cornerstone of all high control groups. Keeping the members busy as hell and making it seem like a 'privlidge' when they get to do more.
