I often wondered if this happens where the child is made a ward of the court, do the parents lose custody of the child, or is this only a temporary thing, just for the blood issue alone?

It is temporary, basically (and I speak from the UK perspective) the court is given something similar to parental responsibility for the child in relation to its treatment so that they can make decisions about treatment without consulting anyone else with parental responsibilty.

In our hospital the decision would be known and understood while in the process of implementing the health care - the "paperwork" ie. court documents would be a formality after the fact - there's simply no waiting once it is deemed an appropriate decision, aside from any need for extra security which would take less than a minute. I'm not sure how things are in the U.S. or U.K. but here the benefit of the doubt goes to safety of the child in the circumstance, and dealing with how much of a whackjob parents may be comes second - and it's not just jws.

Recently we had a talk at the hospital by visiting jws who showed a film on blood alternatives that included autologous transfusion - when asked why that was accepted they said, “It wasn't”.

Everyone who hadn’t dealt with jws before were shaking their heads and looking perplexed at the ridiculous duplicity of the presentation.
