CC - I thanketh thee.
Woodsman,
Nice post. I don't think Tom is anti-modern society or technology at all. In fact a part of our discussion was how we can use technology to deal with some of these issues.
I agree with your post. What I think we need to be aware of is not losing a deep connection with this incredible planet we live on. I feel it can go a long way when people understand very clearly where their food comes from, their water, where their waste goes when they flush the toilet or put out the garbage, how that meat got into the meat counter at the supermarket, how their car runs and where what powers it came from. Society's that use the earth very directly to supply their needs often have that connection in some ways that we could benefit from.
In no way do I see hunter/gatherer society's as idyllic - but there are aspects of them that we need to keep learning from. They also had considerably more leisure than farmers. I worked on a dairy farm as a teenager, and knew for sure one thing - I never wanted to be a farmer! Some parts of it were fun, but it seemed to me that you were essentially a slave to your herd, up at 5 am and still in the barn at 8 pm, 7 days a week, making sure those girls got milked! Thank god for the technology that helps the farmers. Here in Vermont now we have a program where the farmers are supplying the electricity for the farm using cow shit! Yes!
Anyway, I'm rambling. Just wanted to thank you for the post (and for the above posts from others), and pass on a couple of comments. Were you a JW in Keene, or did that come later? I was born there.

I became a JW later. In West Swanzey we had a couple of JW girls on our street. For reasons we know all to well I never got to know them.
I'm jealous you live in Vermont. It is our favorite state. Brattleboro is only 2 hours from my driveway and a really fun town. We camp at Jamaica State Park in Jamaica and sight see just about everywhere else. Who knows, someday I may be your neighbor again.

I live just north of Brattleboro, in Westminster. Right off I-91.
I go past the Jamaica State Park a lot. I'm in the Southern Vermont Wilderness Search and Rescue group, and we use the Jamaica and Winhall Fire/Police Stations all the time for our equipment and monthly trainings.
Let me know next time your up this way. PM me if you want and let me know where you're at. We only live a few hours apart.
Happy New Year.
By the way, my partner in the mag said this article has gotten over 1200 hits today alone! Most from here. He was shocked. I told him you guys are AWESOME!

One of my partners in the new magazine came to this site and read yesterday. He's not a JW, but he was impressed with a lot of the writing and comments.
Nice job!

Seeker: As someone who is intimately familiary with the publication start-up process, I'd like to offer my best wishes for success. It's a tough field. I hope the advantage of web distribution will be the wind at your back and allow your venture to survive and flourish. Keep us posted as to how it's going.

I think we may be naive enough to not realize how unlikely this is to succeed. Also we're all mostly working for very little at this start-up. I'm hopeful, but we're keeping our eyes open. It's a labor of love.

Ah, labor of love. Been there, done that. Good luck, bro! If you find the magic formula, please let me know!

Seeker4...Ah, I spent a week in 2005 in Naulahka, Kipling's old residence, just a mile or two up from Brattleboro. Good solid house, it was, and nice neighborhood.
