No, you will not be disfellowshipped.

Should you join the YMCA/YWCA, your actions will prove that you no longer wish to be known as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and an annoucement regarding your decision not to be known as one of Jehovah's Witnesses will be briefly announced to the congregation sometime before, during or after the Service Meeting.

My jw says joining the Y is promoting Christendom and taking part in it.

If and when the elders find out they WILL take action. If you are disfellowshipped or they announce that youn are no longer a witness (disassociaton) the end result will be the same. Be prepared.

YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association, but don't misinterpret this to mean that YMCAs are only for "young, Christian men." From its start more than 150 years ago, when George Williams founded the YMCA as a substitute Bible study and prayer for life on the streets, the YMCA was unusual because it crossed the rigid lines that separated all the different churches and social classes in England in those days. This openness was a trait that would lead YMCAs to recognize their strength is in the people they bring together -- Ys are for all people of all faiths, races, ages, abilities and incomes. YMCAs' financial assistance policies ensure that no one is turned away for reasons of inability to pay.

Is it true that for religious reasons Jehovah’s Witnesses may not become members of the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association)?

Yes, that is so. We have long recognized that the YMCA, though not being a church as such, is definitely aligned with the religious organizations of Christendom in efforts to promote interfaith.

In joining the YMCA as a member a person accepts or endorses the general objectives and principles of the organization. He is not simply paying for something he receives, such as when buying things being sold to the public at a store. (Compare 1 Corinthians 8:10; 10:25.) Nor is his membership merely an entry pass, as when a person buys a theater ticket. Membership means that one has become an integral part of this organization founded with definite religious objectives, including the promotion of interfaith. Hence, for one of Jehovah’s Witnesses to become a member of such a so-called "Christian" association would amount to apostasy.

Some individuals have on occasion not become members but have paid a onetime admission fee, viewing this as simply paying for a commercial service available. Even in this regard it is wise to consider whether this course will adversely affect the consciences of others.—1 Cor. 8:11-13.

This would be considered joining another religion, an act of disassociating oneself from the WTS.

Is it possible to enjoy their facilities and programs without "joining"? If so, you may avoid the above. The best thing to do is not tell anyone.

I have had personal experience with this a few years ago - I am now DF for other BS reasons but that was the best thing to ever happen to me!!! - anyway to the YMCA - I had a membership so my wife could get the kids swimming lessons - they discovered it and it was a huge issue - they even made me produce a copy of my letter to end my membership or they said they would DF me for "interfaith"!! - cannot believe I took that crap from them - looking back they treat adults as naughty little children if not worse!!!

Having a meetup of local EX JWs from the Mid Michigan area January 20th - go to www.meetup.com for info

Naughty Abandoned: Oh, there's so many things I could say in response to that.

Good little Abandoned: No, that wouldn't be nice. Someone could be offended.

Naughty Abandoned: Who cares. The world would be a better place if more people had an occasional meal at the Y.

Good little Abandoned: Quit being nasty.

Naughty Abandoned: Well at least I didn't make a comment about sloppy seconds.

Good little Abandoned: Oh, you're incorrigible.

Naughty Abandoned: You noticed! I didn't think you'd notice.
