yes english sport is in a bit of a mess right now....football rugby cricket tennis...although golf is ok.

I suspect that while the Aussies smarted from the last defeat and did something about it, the English boozed away their time and rolled onto the field unprepared, riding on the jubilation of past victories. That would be the usual course of events, as exemplified in the last forty years of World Cup soccer
