Okay I needed to reset my ipod this morning because it froze up and I found this web page which might be helpful for you:

    Hi

You rip the CD into iTunes.

Then you highlight the tracks/album you want and then "drag and drop it" into (Your iPod) icon in the left "margin"

It does take some time to get songs onto the ipod. But you should be able just to select all of the tracks you want (by using the shift key) then dragging them to the ipod. You shouldn't be doing them one at a time. Just drag and drop everything you want to transfer at once.

Thank you very much everyone for all of your advice and help to this iPod idiot.

I spent the weekend working on it and turns out the issue was that the iPod had no power. One quick trip to BestBuy for a power connector, plug into the wall outlet and viola a working iPod complete with menu options in iTunes.

So all is right in the 13 year old world. At least today. Tomorrow on the other hand . . . . . .
