I agree that fear is the prime motivator. But there are others who are comfortable with that way of life. A lot of witnesses have it pretty easy. One friend of mine was an M.S. because his father was an elder. He went out in service maybe 20 minutes on a good month. He counted his time because he had a daughter and assumed she was reading her "My Book of Bible Stories" while he watched hockey games. He never had to graduate school, never had to look for a job, place to live... all that was taken care of by the congregation. Had no bloody idea about the contents of the Bible and didn't really care. He was raised in it and the thought of leaving it or doing any extra research was completely remote to him. He admitted to me once that he didn't even really believe it, but it's just "what you do". I think there are many like him out there. Not to pat ourselves on the back, but I feel that most JWD posters are very intelligent and courageous people that just weren't content to sit and be fed the same line of B.S. week after week. A lot of dubs are just lazy; intellectually and otherwise.

no i think they really believe it.they believe in it all,

yes there are maybe some that doubt that wonder where the end is, and maybe stay for family etc

but i've seen first hand how familys can cut their loved ones off and feel so hurt over it but why do they do it?? because they believe that 'it' is true they believe they are doing the best for their 'lost' ones, that they are going to die at armagdon if they dont try and ignore them to 'win' them back

twisted i know but i know my family believe it with all their heart and thats why its torn our family apart and i hate it,

and yes i do wonder sometimes how they keep going but as my mum said recently jehovah keeps them going thru all the hard times! (why can't they see the hard times are mostly caused by the stupid religons rules!!)

    Pride, and lust for power.

Underachievers feel important in a groupthink of "speshul" shiny people whose god is bigger than your god and is gonna beat you all up.

All JWs are speshul, though Sister Smug and Brother Power Trip are more speshul than others.

Many JWs live in the Land of Denial

Denial is a defense mechanism in which a person is faced with a fact that is too painful to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence. The subject may deny the reality of the unpleasant fact altogether (simple denial), admit the fact but deny its seriousness (minimisation) or admit both the fact and seriousness but deny responsibility (transference).

Most go because they are convinced that it is the only place to go in the world today. They feel like they have found the truth, and rather than be rational, independent thinkers, they prefer to fill their existence with "fine works" and loyalty - servitude if you will to the borg. How sad...

They have a unity that no one else has even though it's being forced upon them, you can truly go anywhere in the world as many of us have experienced and you do feel that you are among brothers and sisters and you can truly trust them.

I have experienced it as many of you have.

Something that most other religions do not have.

I still don't agree with their teachings

Have you ever been so busy that you decide to worry about something later? Well, that's the jw life in a nut shell. Between meetings, field service, preparation, bible reading, and working to support all this, there isn't time to worry about whether it's all a cruel joke or not.

Is it fear of being destroyed?

At least that was my case. Fear of Armageddon and fear of dying. I bet that is the case with most of them. And fear is not suppose to be the reason why you serve God. Is suppose to be love, but how can you love a God that says will destroy you if you don't comply with certain rules that I think the Organization has set up themselves? It's like being married to a man that abuses you, you are afraid of leaving him in fear of what he may do to you if you do. That is not love, that is terror. You feel you can't be yourself, you don't do anything right, you have to do more and more to please him. I want to think that Jehovah is not that way, but that is what we have known all along.
