Microphone duty is the start of the road to being MS then elder - so brothers generally (or used to) make a big deal of it
How about toilet cleaner.
Something I wrote about that subject for Randys site many years ago LOL! The Visit of the CO:
MS Candidates are seen in the corners of the hall fumbling with 3 x 5 cards, sweating, pacing and practicing their microphone cord winding skills for perfect coils every time. The younger brothers watch with envy and awe, knowing that they, too, will give up a four-year scholarship to Harvard Law School to be able to wind a mike cord like that some day, in service to Jehovah. The single sisters watch those single brothers, dreaming of days of endless pioneering with babies in strollers, Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds every single day, and checks from the Welfare Department because they have no job skills. Paradise is at hand, could life possibly be more full?
OK, so I have appreciated all your answers. I wasn't really expecting nearly so much input and it has certainly shed "new light" for me on the whole mindset of what service to Jehovah seems to be all about. In our church, the various opportunities for service - anything from usher, to church Council, to greeter, to host of coffee hour, etc is seen as a way to use your God given gifts. A way to serve God by serving others. I am sure there are those who do this out of pride, not purely from a humble servant doing their part to serve the community. However, from what I have read here, this mic thing is purely pride, not just on the part of the person serving, but actually promoted that way by those who decide who gets to serve. There doesn't seem to be any assessment of each individual to see where their spiritual gifts, and there are many given by God, would best be used and developed. How very sad! We have what we call Ministry Teams of Worship and Music, Youth, Finance, Welcoming & Inviting, Stewardship, Christian Education, Property, etc. Anyone can serve on these Teams and are steered toward the Team which fits their gifts by the pastor or other Team members. Other churches call their Teams by different names or have more or less, but operate basically the same way. Many actually give people a sort of evaluation form to complete to help them determine the best area of service for them. (think e.harmony for spiritual gifts!) Well, hopefully enough people will eventually learn from people such as yourselves that they are being deceived by this organization and can discover more worthwhile ways to receive the kind of appreciation and esteem-building they so desperately seek.

JH, women/sisters can be toilet cleaners. Only males can be microphone handlers.
It's hard to believe that in this day and age their is a group of people who can perpetrate such standover tactics - to require that you provide certain censored comments as part of a charade of support to influence moral - I'd expect more from sales companies (ones that declare themselves that is)
According to the elder, "a publisher" complained to the elders that "the servants weren't commenting enough."
There are three servants in the hall. One of them has had cancer treatment and has a problem with his saliva glands and lymph nodes...I'm probably not describing his condition accurately, but the bottom line is that he has no voice, at all. His speaking is like someone parched with thirst who just lost their voice. So naturally he gives comments in a rare fashion. To his credit, he has a good dispostion and I appreciate him for being a survivor.
The other brother is a literature servant with ADD. He's a nice guy, but very absentminded.
The last is me. And I have absolutely no desire to comment on this brainwashing.
So maybe this person had a point. The point is, what does it matter? Our hall does not lack for comments, not in the least. This leads me to believe that "a publisher" was just a figment of the BoE's imagination.
some will come as evangelisers, some as teachers and some as microphone handlers ! ...these truly are gifts in men

According to Mark 12:23, "There were many who were chosen to serve as carriers of the voice amplifying devices. On these men many blessings were poured out, and they were blessed to see the "babies butts" in the womens blouses". Amen
