In most churches, there are standing microphones for the speaker, and perhaps at a large Bible study or church council vote type meeting there might be microphones passed around.
Kingdom Halls are different. They spend a lot of time asking questions. Now the answers come straight out of the article or book that was just read over (literally, they read a paragraph and then answer from that paragraph) and have been diligently underlined by all the good JWs before they get to the meeting. They eagerly (or not!) raise their hands to give the expected and pre-determined answer. Then, a young man of the congregation, who has proven himself worthy, takes a long pole with the microphone at the end of it and passes it across the various rows until it finds the lucky person who will be answering the question. This requires the young men to pay attention to the speaker and to be able to hold a long pole across up to 5 or so people to the person responding. Sometimes, little old ladies try to grasp the microphone, not wanting to let it go when they have had their say-or more importantly when the elder at the front is trying to get them to shut up and go on and they haven't finished yet, Many try to adjust it, or talk really close to the microphone, little kids pull on the cord. It can be challenging. THAT is microphone duty. It also requires them keeping it out of the way of folks headed to the bathroom, keeping the cord (which is very long-it covers the entire hall)neatly coiled. These young men are the pride of their congregations, from early to late teens usually-pre ministerial servants (deacons). Girls do not get mike priveleges unless there are no men to do it. They do not read the paragraphs in the books or magazines. They do not give talks. They do give little demonstrations with other sisters (only).
Men, women and children give answers at the meetings. Sometimes even the mike guys do, but not often.
