Been there, done that! It hurts a bit, but on the scale of pain it isn't anywhere near apocalyptic. I don't think it is any worse than the dentist needle. . .actually not as bad. And WOW, it will feel better. The only problem is that eventually you will have to deal with the underlying problem as you can only do the cortisone so many times before they won't anymore. I forget why, but there is a limit.

Yes, I've had a cortisone shot for my Occipital Neuritis. The shots were injected into the back of my skull. I had taken a pain pill before the shot so it wasn't so bad. I had to get two injections after the two injections of lidocaine to numb the pain for the shots. The steroid ended up making my blood sugars go off the scale and it caused me to have a manic episode and then I got depressed as the steroid was leaving my system. This doesn't happen to everyone. My husband has had several steroid shots into his shoulders (for bursitis) and into his wrist (for carpal tunnel). He, usually, gets immediate relief. He doesn't get the steroid mania like I do.

I forgot to mention that I got immediate relief for my headache, too.

Shots dont usually hurt. Be calm, relax and look away if you must. If you stay calm its over before you know it. If you make a big deal out of it, it will be a big deal. Stay calm, relax.

I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder once and it helped me a lot. I could move my arm again and I was able to rotate my shoulder. That was the only treatment required on that shoulder. I'd do it again.

I had to get one in my knee. I was so scared and had heard so many horror stories, including one from the nurse.... I finally ran out of the room. The doctor had left the needle laying on the table while I waited for him! He caught me and talked be back into the room.

I was shaking I was so scared. Turns out I didn't even feel it. He said the secret is the size of the needle. He said to always ask for the smallest in circumference. The nurse herself was so surprised and then was angry because she had been through terrible pain with an injection in her wrist. She was a new nurse and had gone to a different doctor for her treatment.

    Hope this helps.

I'm suffering with PF right now. Had the shot and it really didn't hurt . . .doc sprayed the heel with anesthetic before and during the shot. Unfortunately, the pain relief lasted only one day. I wrap my ankle rather tightly and it seems to help; also stay off it as much as possible. Good luck !

I'm an experienced cortisone recipient. Here's the deal:

A good doctor who does this all the time will do it without hurting you. In your foot, there is less likely to be the kind of pain you hear about with knees - and pain with shots to the knee can be avoided by a doctor who knows where to insert the needle. so get somebody who does these all the time.

Cortisone is fantastic for relieving pain and giving your joints a little cushion. The shots do wear off. How fast depends on the condition of the target area. Subsequent shots generally do not last as long. You may get relief for six months with the first one, while the second will only kill the pain for 3 months and by the fourth or fifth shot, they don't work at all. It's a good temporary fix if you plan to have surgery at a later date to permanently correct the problem.

    Good luck!

I think I had the same thing in my heel. I wore a ski boot looking contraption to bed every night for a couple of weeks and did some other therapy exercises and the pain went away never to be felt again. I did have a cortizone shot in a shoulder and the relief overshadowed whatever pain was inflicted by the needle. The shoulder has been trouble free ever since.

I mentioned my experiences with the shots as not being bad-I should preface it with the fact that they were administered to my foot also. Not the same issue, but it was the foot. Mostly I remember it felt cold! They gave a numbing gel or something first. Just don't look at the needle-they are longer sometimes than standard needles that you see. But I have had 3 amnio's and those little cortisone needles are nothing next to that. Incidentally, if you have had kids-this cortisone shot is NOTHING!
