I remember last year around this time it was a two day assembly (that's when my roommate got Baptized).
It used to be a weekender mindbender when they had two circuit assemblies a year, but they reduced it to one two day and one one day....
I seem to recall that in my early years. What a pain in the ass it was to waste three perfectly good weekends per year. And those assemblies are LONG and boring.
Baptisms are authorized only at assemblies (2-day circuit and 1-day Special Assembly Day) and district conventions with rare exceptions.
That was the heyday of the assembly halls and more circuits could be scheduled in the assembly halls rather than using secular meeting places which were more expensive.
The WTS also says that the Israelites met 3 times a year, thus JWs should meet 3 times a year.
I'll be sure to ask my roommate to make note of how many get baptized and I'll report back.
Personally I think its because the JWs start getting bored and so these in between little SPIRITUALLY UPLIFTING AND ENCOURAGING SOURCES OF JEHOVAHS BOUNTIFUL TABLE OF SPIRITUAL FOOD...(oh hang on...I have to go puke.....)
Ok.... are like Valentines Day is after Christmas and New Years. You just gotta fill in that time gap to keep the wallets flowing :)
To keep my mom depressed about having to go "back to the world" after it is over.

It's a good fundraising excercise, and an opportunity to renew the indoctrination for 6 hours instaed of the usual 2

Please ask her what ages they are as well oppgirl. I'd be willing to bet most of them are under 16.
okay...will do.
Tried to post this a second ago, but everything just went black when I hit enter...
Anyway, back in the 70s, an unnofficial bunch of wanna-be big-shot elders set up their own "special events committee". They took it upon themselves to do little one-evening assemblies, in large rented halls, around Oklahoma City. Mostly "bethel guys" or "missionaries" they knew and flew in for some wining and dining. It went on about 6 months or so, as I recall. It got out of hand, of course, with an "event" almost every month at the height of it all.
The CO & DO put a stop to it, and told them there were to be no more of these without official Society sanctions. The "committee" got ticked off, but the rest of the elders around town thought it was hilarious to see their arrogance get put down.
I guess the Society may have stolen the idea if they are doing 1 day or half-day events now...
